Chapter 94
Valencia’s POV
I cradled Castor in my arms, the comforting glow of his egg casing some of the tension in my chest as I made my way to try bedroom. I didn’t really have much to do here, did I?
I frowned, my thoughts swirling as I absentmindedly rubbed Castor’s smooth surface. Should I try to remember Raiden’s illness? It might be my only lead. But what kind of illness could affect an Alpha so strongly that even modern medicine–or magic–couldn’t stop it?
Alpha wolves usually lived far longer than normal wolves, some made it past two hundred even, mostly dying of old age.
That was part of why there were more Alphas alive than Omegas their health and resilience were unparalleled. So what could it have been?
I sifted through my limited medical knowledge from my previous life, trying to find a plausible explanation. It couldn’t have been cancer or any normal medical disease–not unless he was purposefully poisoning himself, which seemed absurd.
Zinia fever? I paused at the thought, remembering how it had been a major cause of death years ago. But no, that wasn’t it Zinia fever was later discovered to be a curse, one caused by the separation of bonded mates. Raiden’s mate had passed away years ago; he wasn’t “separated.” So, that didn’t fit either.
What else could it have been?
Frustration gnawed at me, and I stopped a passing butler on my way back to the bedroom. “Excuse me,” I said, shifting Castor slightly to one arm, “could you point me toward the library?”
The butler bowed slightly. “The largest library in the estate is on the third floor, Madam.”
I nodded. “Thank you.”
I knew I could have gone to the thirteenth floor, but that library, though humongous, seemed specifically made for, and about dragons or mythical creatures.
That’s not what I was currently looking for.
The third–floor library would have more general information. If I couldn’t find anything here, I could always investigate the thirteenth floor later.
Anyways, I knew Dante’s office was also on the third floor, maybe I could go pay him a visit later? It seemed absurd really. Why did I have so much time on my hand all of a sudden?
Then the realization dawned on me. I wasn’t going to the academy anymore, so no studying to keep me occupied. I wasn’t in the Wolfe pack anymore nor was I married to someone like Jaxon, who was the type to use me to my limit and call it my ‘duty‘.
Nor did I have any urgent death threats looming on my head, well, there was Raiden. But I still had time to deal with it. Didn’t things seem too peaceful all of a sudden? And that thought left a bad taste in
my
mouth.
The elevatorride to the third floor was quiet, but as soon as the doors slid open, I frowned. Was it my imagination, or was there… knocking?

Chapter 94
It was faint but unmistakable muilled, rhythmic thuds echoing from somewhere down the hall.
No, wait. It seemed more like banging.
I looked down at Castor in my hands. “Do you hear that?” I whispered softly, not really expecting an answer. The egg thrummed lightly against my fingers, his vibrations almost matching the strange rhythm of the sound.
I should have just walked into the library. I could have ignored the sound entirely. But, of course, my curiosity got the better of me.
The muffled banging grew louder as I followed the sound. My frown deepened when I realized it was coming from the direction of Dante’s office. What the hell?
I quickened my pace, my soft, cushioned slippers barely making a sound on the carpeted hallway.
Wait. Carpet?
I stopped for a moment, blinking in confusion. Hadn’t this hallway been marble a few days ago? Since when did Dante install carpets?
Pushing the thought aside, I approached the door to his office. The noise abruptly stopped, leaving the hall eerily silent. My gaze flickered to a smaller side door just to the right of the office’s entrance.
I reached for the handle and turned it.
“It’s locked?” I muttered to myself, my brow furrowing. But there, hanging just beside the door, was a key. Without thinking, I grabbed it and inserted it into the lock.
The door clicked open easily, but before I could step inside, it was yanked open with such force that I stumbled forward.
I barely had time to yelp before I was grabbed and thrown to the ground. My head hit the floor with a painful thud, and for a moment, I saw stars.
My first thought was to protect Castor. Thankfully I had made sure to cradle him close in my arms.
“What the hell?!” I gasped, my voice hoarse. My vision cleared just enough for me to see the figure looming over me, his silver eyes blazing with fury.
Aiden.
Before I could process what was happening, his hands were around my throat, tightening just enough to make breathing difficult.
“What the hell is wrong with you?!” I croaked, squirming beneath him as I tried to pry his hands off me with my left hand. My heart pounded in my chest, not from fear but from pure adrenaline.
“I’ve been trapped in here for three days!” Aiden snarled, his grip tightening slightly before he seemed to catch himself. He loosened his hold just enough for me to breathe, but his silver eyes were still wild with rage. Three. Days.”
I blinked up at him, my mind reeling. Three days? Trapped? My frown deepened as I processed his words. “I–what? I didn’t know!”
“Of course, you didn’t know,” he snapped, his voice dripping with venom. His eyes landed on my neck. “Too busy fucking your precious Alpha to notice, huh?”
