“What are you doing?” Jessica’s face flushed crimson as she instinctively tried to step back.

But she had just dismounted, her horse still beside her. In her haste to dodge, she nearly collided with the animal.

Leon steadied her. “Stay still,” he cautioned. “We’re in the predator zone, the horse is already skittish. If you startle it, you might scare it sway?

Realizing this, Jessica immediately stroked her horse’s mane and said softly, “Go wait for me outside.”

As if it understood her perfectly, the horse obediently trotted away.

Leon also glanced at his horse, his was even more intuitive, understanding exactly what he wanted with just a look.

Leon’s horse quickly trotted off as well.

“Can you keep your distance now?” Jessica took two deliberate steps sideways.

This time, Leon didn’t stop her. He fixed his gaze on her face and whispered, “Did I… go too rough on you last night?”

“What nonsense!” Jessica’s face burned with embarrassment.

After he asked that, the fluttery feeling in her chest came back again.

What infuriated her even more was when she looked up and saw Leon’s gaze shift downward from her face.

Jessica glared at him and snapped, “You devil! If you keep being this indecent, we’ll go our separate ways!”

Leon’s face flushed as he immediately averted his bold gaze.

“I… didn’t mean to. Sorry, I just got carried away last night,” he said, his voice low with regret. “I’ll keep myself in check from now on. At least until we’re married, I won’t cross the line with you.”

To Leon, Jessica was the one he treasured above all else in this life.

Leon said, “But Jessica, could you say yes to marrying me a little sogner? I’m afraid I might not be able to control myself next time.”

Jessica could only stare at him in stunned silence, completely at a loss for words.

“Jess?” he pressed, his voice soft yet insistent.

Jessica said, “I’ve petitioned the King for permission to become a general. One day, I’ll lead troops into battle. So, would you still be willing to marry me?”

She only meant to scare him off, but to her surprise, Leon’s eyes lit up with excitement. “Perfect! Now, as husband and wife, we can fight side by side and take on the world together,” he said.

“I never said I’d marry you, Your Highness!” Jessica quickly interrupted, afraid he’d misunderstand. “Your Highness, I just want you to know, I have no intention of ever getting married.”

“So, you want us to be unofficial lovers?” Leon exhaled, as if genuinely weighing the idea. “Honestly, that’s fine by me. A wedding is just what society expects. If you don’t want one, we can skip it. I just don’t want you to feel wronged.”

Jessica stared, eyes wide, utterly confused by his train of thought.

Leon was still contemplating the matter. “How about this? I’ll go to the Yates family and ask Algernon to officiate a simple wedding for us. It would pain your grandfather to see you with me without any formal status. For his sake, Jessica, just bear with me and agree to the simplest ceremony possible, okay?”
