The two of them walked out of the lounge together, spotting Jennifer already seated at her table in the distance.

A waiter approached them with a courteous smile, leading them to their seats. As they walked, Charlotte couldn’t help but notice how Arthur seemed to subtly close the gap between them. 

The lights in the hall dimmed as the auction began, leaving the stage bathed in a focused glow. Charlotte turned to glance at Arthur. In the faint light, it was hard to make out the expression on his face. 

Once everyone was settled, Jennifer, the chairwoman of the charity foundation, stepped onto the stage. She delivered a well–rehearsed speech, setting the tone for the night, and soon, the auction got underway. 

The early items were rare gemstones–beautiful, but not particularly exciting. Even so, their starting bids already exceeded 10 million dollars. 

Charlotte watched as item after item was displayed, her interest fading quickly. She felt a light nudge on her shoulder and turned to see Evie smiling mischievously. “I heard they’re auctioning off a rare gemstone tonight. Supposedly centuries old and worth a fortune. Want to try your luck?”

Evie chuckled, “Well, I’ve got my eye on a ring. I think I’ve got just enough in my budget for it.” 

“Good luck,” Charlotte said with a smile. 

Before long, the ring Evie wanted was brought out–a jade masterpiece, its clarity and craftsmanship making it a true standout. The starting bid was three million dollars, with increments of half a million dollars and no cap. 

Evie raised her paddle first, confidently bidding four million dollars.

When the price reached 6.5 million dollars, the room fell silent. Evie’s lips curved into a triumphant smile, her confidence radiating as she prepared to claim her prize.

Evie shook her head, forcing a smile. “It’s nothing.” But her breathing was uneven as she leaned closer to Charlotte, her voice trembling. “The person who outbid me… it’s Mabel’s father.” 

Charlotte’s eyes widened in shock. “Are you serious?” 

“I’d know him anywhere.” Evie’s voice shook slightly. “Lottie, I have to go. If he’s here because of me, I can’t risk staying. Even if it’s not about me, I’d rather not take any chances.” 

Charlotte nodded. “Go ahead.” 

Evie set down her paddle and slipped out quietly. In the dim lighting, no one noticed her departure. 

Once outside, she hurried toward her car. The valet had already brought it around, and it was waiting for her at the entrance. 

“Ms. Clarke.” That familiar voice stopped her cold. Her back stiffened as she shut her eyes for a moment. Pretending not to hear him would only make her look more suspicious. 

Taking a deep breath, she turned around with a puzzled expression. The tall man approached her slowly, his steps unhurried. The black mask he wore was simple yet intricate, its delicate patterns exuding a subtle sense of danger.
