The man’s sharp jawline and angular features gave him a commanding presence. His thin lips curved into a faint smile as he studied her with a hint of amusement. “The charity gala’s not over. Why are you leaving so early?” 

He stopped just in front of Evie. The cool autumn breeze brushed past, adding a faint chill to the air. Her delicate face turned pale in the wind, but she kept up her signature smile. 

“Oh, it’s you. What a coincidence,” she said lightly. “I’ve got something urgent to take care of. Was there something you needed?” 

Her heart pounded in her chest, her grip on the fabric of her dress tightening until her knuckles turned white. She thought, “Why has he noticed me? I’d done everything to stay under the radar.” 

The man pulled out a box and opened it, revealing the jade ring from earlier. Under the light, the gemstone gleamed with a soft, luminous glow, its diamond accents sparkling like tiny stars. “You seemed to like this,” he said, his tone casual but firm. “Take it. It’s yours.” 

Evie glanced at the ring but quickly shook her head. “That’s far too generous. I’m sorry, but I can’t accept it.”

The man’s eyes followed her retreating figure, narrowing slightly. When they had stood close, the breeze had carried her scent to him–familiar and intoxicating, something that lingered in his mind.

Arthur didn’t pull his hand away. His palm lingered on her smooth skin, lightly brushing as if he couldn’t resist the sensation. “I think someone spiked my drink,” he said, his voice hoarse and strained. 

Charlotte frowned. “Don’t look at me. I didn’t drug you, so don’t even think about blaming me.” 

Arthur let out a quiet sigh, as though resigning himself. “I didn’t say it was you. I just… I’m not feeling right. Can you help me to the lounge?”

His voice sounded so off, so unsteady, that Charlotte hesitated. After a moment, she sighed and nodded, “Fine.” 

She slipped an arm around him, helping him up, and they made their way to the lounge. Inside, she helped Arthur onto the couch before quickly stepping back, putting distance between them. “I’ll go find Dr. Holland,” she said briskly, already heading toward the door. 

“Charlotte…” Arthur’s voice was thick with desperation, his body burning up, every nerve screaming for relief. He reached for her, but she was already walking out. 

He thought, “Charlotte, you are my cure but now you’re going to find me a doctor.”
