Charlotte looked down at her with confusion but still crouched to the little girl’s level. 

In the next moment, Mabel kissed her cheek and spoke in her sweet, childish voice, “Ms. Lottie, if you’re sad, cry it out. It helps make you feel better! That’s what I always do. And if you’re still feeling down, eat something yummy. I have lots and lots of treats. I’ll bring them to you tomorrow.” 

Charlotte managed a weak smile and fondly squeezed one of Mabel’s hair buns. “Alright, I’ll have some treats. Bring them. over, and we’ll enjoy them together,” she said softly. 

“Alright!” 

Mabel nodded and hugged Charlotte. “Ms. Lottie, Mommy and I will always be here for you.” 

Charlotte felt tears welling up in her eyes. She hugged Mabel tightly before turning to Evie. “Drive safely.” 

Evie nodded, reluctant to leave. 

Pete stood in the doorway, studying her with a complicated expression. “What if he doesn’t show up at the Courthouse tomorrow?”

“I’ll file the lawsuit,” Charlotte replied calmly. “We’re not meant to be husband and wife. This relationship needs to end now. Whatever drama the lawsuit causes isn’t my concern.” 

Pete nodded. “Alright. Let me know if you need anything.” 

“Thank you,” Charlotte said with a slight nod. 

He’d rushed from Camoreham to save her. She wouldn’t forget 

his kindness. 

Pete reached out and ruffled her hair. “Hey Charlotte, if you want to thank me, why not call me ‘brother‘ for once?” 

Charlotte responded by slamming the door shut with a loud bang. 

Pete barely avoided getting his nose smashed. He took a step back and gave a resigned smile.
