Sebastian’s face showed a trace of self–blame. 

Charlotte looked at him, feeling a twinge of bitterness in her heart. She had never noticed before, but it seemed that every time they met or talked about her marriage, he would always show that helpless and guilty look. Back then, she never said much about it, even going as far as to comfort him instead. 

She lowered her gaze slightly and said calmly, “Sebastian, how long have you and your girlfriend been together? Every time I try to meet her, she always seems to be busy. Is it because she heard I’m Arthur’s wife and got scared?” 

Mentioning his girlfriend, Sebastian’s face softened with a smile. “It’s been over a year now. She’s not scared but busy. She’ll be free soon, and then you two can meet. You can also check her 

out for me.” 

Charlotte really wanted to ask if he knew anything about Joanna’s appearance at the charity banquet. 

But she held back. 

Some emotions, which she couldn’t quite put into words, seemed like a fragile paper. With just a small poke, it would break. 

She decided to change the subject.

He jumped to his feet. “What did you say?” 

Charlotte looked at him, puzzled. 

Moments later, he hung up the phone. 

“Sebastian, what happened?” 

Sebastian gripped his phone tightly, his face burning with anger. “Arthur’s men kidnapped Joanna! He’s claiming that she has something to do with what happened five years ago. How is that possible? She doesn’t even know him. How could she have targeted him?” 

He looked at her anxiously. “Lottie, call Arthur and ask him to release Joanna. She has nothing to do with what happened five years ago!” 

Charlotte didn’t move. 

Sebastian looked at her, a hint of confusion crossing his face. “Lottie, why don’t you contact Arthur?” 

“It’s because I need to see Joanna.” 

She calmly met his gaze. “Sebastian, I’ve been carrying the blame for five years. Now, I finally have a chance to clear my name, and I won’t let it slip away. Arthur is investigating what happened back then, and my friends are also looking into it…”

The room fell into an eerie silence. Sebastian looked at her pale face, her clear eyes shimmering with unshed tears, hiding the fragments of her shattered trust. 

“Lottie, what do you mean by that? Are you suspecting that I plotted against you?” His voice trembled with disbelief. 

He took a step back. “The reason I knew is because when I came back, I couldn’t find you. I checked the hotel’s surveillance, asked the staff, and found out where you were. I was afraid something happened to you, so I forced the door open. But I still came too late.” 

His expression was full of regret and pain. “Five years ago, I was just a student. I had no power to fight against our parents. They arranged the marriage with the Harrison family and sent me abroad. Lottie, I’ve regretted this for years. I should’ve come back earlier. If I had, I could’ve protected you. You wouldn’t have been schemed against or hurt.” 

He took a deep breath, his eyes slightly red by the end. “But Lottie, how could you suspect me?”
