He backed away from me with a scowl on his face, "Why? It has been, what? Two years? I highly doubt the reason is as important now."
I shook my head, "Of course you don't understand."
"No, I don't! All you have done is cheat on me and then refuse to tell me why. God, if I was a terrible husband, then tell me!" He fumed.
I stared at him, my heart twisting with the pain I could see in his eyes. The desperation was as clear as day on his face, forcing me to look past him. "The reason is still...relevant. I mean, it just...it's still...existing today. I can't tell you, I'm sorry."
"No, you're not sorry. Of course you aren't, you're just someone who loves to mess with other's emotions," he spat.
"Babe?"
We both snapped out attention to the door as a woman walked in, her eyes studying the both of us. Gabriel forced a smile onto his face, but I could see what he was feeling still. He stared at her as if she was the only girl in this whole world, the way he used to look at me.
You need this job, Scarlett. You need this job.
"Hey, honey, I wasn't expecting you to show up," he chuckled, kissing her on the lips.
She smiled, "I wanted to surprise you, who's that?"
"My new secretary and..." he trailed off. "I'm not going to hide anything from you, she's also my ex-wife."
The woman gaped at him, "She's the whore who cheated on you?"
I sucked in a breath, not once in my life have I been called whore. What made this even more painful was the cold look he gave me.
"Yeah, that's her," he answered.
I clenched my jaw, of course he won't defend me. Why should he? I had cheated on him, whether it for his safety or not.
"Oh...what is your name again? Scar? Lottie?" The woman smirked.
I swallowed, "Scarlett, but I'd rather an inconsiderate and ignorant woman, such as yourself, to refer to me as Miss. Summers."
"Excuse me?" She seethed.
"You're excused."
"Gabe, you're just going to let her talk to me like that?"
Gabriel glanced at me before looking at the woman, "Well, honey, you sort of asked for it...you did call her a whore."
"Well, I...I...you didn't defend her!"
"Yes, and no doubt I'll hear quite a bit from her. Unfortunately, dear, she's good at her job. I can't fire her because you want me to, that is not how it works. I also have no rules for any of my employees to remain mute when someone insults them."
She pouted before looking back at me, "I'm sorry for calling you a whore, Miss. Summers."
I smiled, "Apology not accepted."
"What?"
"I don't like you."
"Babe, are you-
"Mel, this isn't a battle you want to fight. You don't know how viscous she is. I do. You're welcome," Gabriel sighed.
"Oh, don't forget petty, I am extremely petty," I voiced. "Just in case you thought a simple apology will make me forgive you. Not that you meant it anyway."
"Miss. Summers that is enough. Now, be the good little secretary, get to work," Gabriel snarled.
I flashed him a glare, but didn't say anything else. I only eyed his girlfriend before taking my seat and getting to work. They had quickly left my office, returning to his to do whatever. After a few minutes, I could hear muffled moans from his office, making my blood boil with jealousy. But not even anger and jealousy could get rid of the pain in my chest.
An hour later, I gently knocked on the door, holding his new schedule for this week's meetings. Once he said come in, I pushed the door open, swallowing my tears when I saw them. She was sitting on his lap, her blouse now messed up, as if she had quickly thrown it on. His hair was a mess, his shirt was open, and it smelled of arousal.
I shrugged, "Nothing. Maybe you should work on her mouth...she's going to get herself in trouble."
I yelped when I was suddenly pinned against the wall with his hand on my jaw. For a second, I was scared of him, expecting him to hurt me. But he didn't, he simply released a breath and stroked my cheek.
"Something happened, I'm going to find out what," he whispered.
I gritted my teeth, "Again, quit obsessing over it. You're making excuses so it won't hurt anymore."
"No, I just remember the woman I married. The one who was against cheating, the one who had her heartbroken and vowed to never be one of them. Yet...you cheated anyway. So, I do apologize if that just seems a little odd to me."
I internally groaned, this was one reason I couldn't stay around him. He's far too smart, keeping secrets from him next to impossible.
"It won't change the fact I'm nothing but a burden to you," I spat.
He furrowed his eyebrows, "I never said-
"The night you found out, you called me a burden. You told me I was worthless and no one would love me. Then today, you didn't bother to say anything when you're girlfriend insulted me. Then, made it known you plan on proposing to her some day. I get that I had hurt you, but it was two years ago. You crushed my heart just as much. When will it be enough for you?" I asked.
He stared at me for a moment before pressing his forehead against mine. "I love Melody, defending you would have only caused issues with our relationship. I wasn't trying to shove it in your face, I am seriously planning on proposing to her soon. You just can't handle the fact that I had moved on."
"Then why are you trying to make excuses for me cheating?" I whispered.
He smirked, "I just want to know the reason."
"And what is this?" I asked, motioning to our close bodies.
His eyes widened before I pushed him away from me, "I'm only attracted to you. It'll go away, just like you had. I should thank you though. You pushed me right into Melody's arms, someone I truly love," he seethed.
I turned my back to him, "I know."
With that, I walked away, returning to my office where I silently closed the door. This time, I locked it, not wanting to be bothered. I then sat in my chair and cried, telling myself this is the last time I'll cry.
