Chapter 18 

Melody stood there without moving. She lowered her eyes. It was hard to tell what she was thinking 

Krystal noticed she hadn’t gotten in and raised her eyebrows. Her voice sounded slightly impatient. “What is it? Why aren’t you getting in? 

Melody looked toward Jeremy. He was in the driver’s seat, typing on his phone in reply to someone. When he heard Krystal speak, he lifted his eyes to glance at Melody. 

It was a calm look, but something in Melody’s heart suddenly felt sour. 

Krystal’s coat couldn’t have just been put there today. Melody knew jeremy got along very well with Krystal, but she didn’t realize they were already this close. 

Jeremy was very particular about cleanliness and didn’t like anyone else’s belongings in his car. He would feel they invaded his space. 

Melody spaced out for a moment. Jeremy stated at her and spoke in a heavier tone. “What is going on?” 

Melody snapped back to reality. She loosened her hold on the car door and explained in a quiet voice, “I just remembered I left something in the department. I need to go back for it.” 

Jeremy’s expression didn’t change. He simply locked his phone screen and placed it face down. “How long should we wait for you?” 

Melody malized Jeremy was already impatient. He never did anything that wasted time. 

Her heart felt a faint, bitter ache. She lowered her eyes to avoid his cold gaze and said hoarsely, “There’s no need to wait for me. You two can go on. I’ll get a cab after pick it up.‘ 

Jeremy nodded calmly. “Alright.” 

Melody shut the car door and stepped back. The sound of the engine rumbled, and jeremy drove off at once. 

She stood there for a while before slowly calling a cab. There was traffic on the way, she arrived home half an hour later than they did. 

Laura acted like she didn’t see her and busied herself. She was ladling soup for Krystal 

Andrew frowned and said, “Wash your hands and come eat.”. 

Most of the dishes on the table were spicy. Laura made them that way for Krystal. 

The family who raised Krystal lived in Yorkwood City, where they liked spicier food. 

Melody picked up a piece of meat and ate slowly. She couldn’t eat s spicy food. There were a few mild dishes, but they were placed out of her immediate reach Andrew set down has fork and spoon and said in a steady voice, “Mel, Krys. Your mom and I decided to throw a gathering for Krys next week We’ll officially introduce her to everyone.” 

He looked at Krystal warmly. “we chose your day off on purpose. I know you don’t want to miss work.” 

Krystal had no expression, and her tone sounded neither pleased nor upset. “Do whatever you want.” 

Andrew then looked at Melody and paused before saying, “Mel, I wanted to talk to you again about moving out of the family home…”
