Ryn's pov
We jumped apart clearly embarrassed at being caught in this position. I looked at Marlie and noticed she wasn't at all mad about what she had witnessed, if anything a smirk was plastered on her lips, letting me know how much she had liked seeing us this way.
Ace clears his throat. "Uh I'll just leave." He says and walks out of the kitchen. I glared at his back, annoyed that he left me with Marlie alone.
Marlie walks up to me and smiles knowingly. "Not together huh?" She asked sarcastically. For an old woman she really knew how to meddle in someone's business.
"We we-re ju-" I began to stutter.
She reaches out and squeezes my hands to comfort me. "It's alright if you don't want to admit it as yet Ryn but I do see the way you two look at each other and I think there's something there worth fighting for." She voices, giving one last squeeze before letting go.
I sigh and shook my head. "You don't understand Marlie, I'm not supposed to be falling for him. But I don't think I can stop at this point, it's only inevitable."
"Why are you holding yourself back dear? He looks like a nice fellow and I haven't seen you give the opposite sex this much attention before, not the way you have given him." She says while looking back to see if anyone was coming in.
It was true, what she had said, I admitted to that already. But I couldn't help myself for being upset that I was slowly falling for a criminal, one whose uncle murdered my parent's right in front of me.
I wasn't sure if I loved him because I have never experienced the feeling before, well not with people who I consider family and I wasn't sure if I wanted to know if I did. It was too early to think that anyway.
"He's a bad guy Marlie, he'll just end up hurting me and I don't think I have it in me to go through heartache again, not when I was still to this day hurting about my parents' death. That's something I can never heal from, so how am I supposed to let myself go and love someone who in the end will just hurt me?" I asked looking down at the floors feeling my eyes well up with tears.
Marlie comes closer and pulls me into a hug. "Oh Ryn, your parents will always be beside you even though you can't see them. It must hurt them to see that you're not letting yourself go and start to live your life how you want to. I'm a hundred percent sure that your parents are very proud of the woman you've become today." She whispered and let me go while wiping the tears that were leaking out of my eyes.
"But how are you a hundred percent sure that Ace will hurt you if you don't try? Don't judge a book by its cover Ryn sometimes you'll just miss the best thing that could've happened to you." She finishes and smiles cheekily. I let out a watery laugh and nodded.
I sniffled and wiped the last remaining tears." Thank you Marlie, I'm glad I know such an amazing person. You'll always remain a special person to me."
She laughs. "Just give the guy a chance so I can get to meet y'all kids. If I do die before I meet them I promise I'll come visit as a blue butterfly."
I let out a giggle. "Marlie stop talking about death, you won't be dying any time soon."
She shrugs. "No one can predict the future but I do know I'll be coming to see you as a butterfly when I do die. I'm also forcing Paul to be a yellow one when he dies. It'll be so lovely to fly with him."
I raise my brows at her, the conversation was now suddenly creeping me out. "Marlie did you take your meds today?" I asked searching her face.
