I was very frustrated that I hadn’t yet solved the problem that Reynold represented, nor the issue with Romulus, who wouldn’t leave Sam alone. I sat there in the police station looking defeated. Detective Bonfim sat next to me with an expression of sympathy for my misfortune. He had news, which gave me a glimmer of hope.

“What’s the news, Bonfim?” Flavian asked, starting to perk up.

“Well, let’s start with the officers who are watching Romulus. He hasn’t left the building since he got out of jail. As you already know, we discovered he’s staying in the apartment of the woman who visited him while he was in prison, definitely a mistress,” While Bonfim was speaking, I remembered the store box from where Sam worked – it could be her.

“What’s this woman’s name, Bonfim? He had a mistress at the stone where Sam worked,” I explained.

“Yes, we interrogated that girl, Cybele, if I’m not mistaken,” Bonfim closed his eyes, remembering. “She visited him a few times in jail, but he broke up with her and soon started getting visits from the sister of a small–time drug dealer who’s been giving narcotics division trouble. I think we mentioned this before. Anyway, this woman’s name is Nicole Fortes. Here, I have a photo of her.”

I didn’t even need to see the photo. When Bonfim said the name, I knew exactly who she was. I couldn’t believe it – of all people, that wretch had to get involved with her.

“She’s my ex–girlfriend,” I said simply. Flavian and Bonfim looked at me confused, their eyes nearly popping out of their heads. “The woman my father left our family for.”

“Damn!” Flavian was shocked. “Now that’s what I call karma. Isn’t she the one who’s been chasing after you?”

“The very same. Back from the grave to haunt me,” I said, feeling a stabbing pain in my head.

“This worries me more. An aggressive ex–boyfriend and an ex–girlfriend who wants to get back together – that’s a guaranteed disaster,” Bonfim scratched his chin. “Well, at least this information keeps us more alert. We need to prevent this woman from getting access to Samantha.”

“She only approached Samantha once. Maybe she doesn’t even know that Samantha is the same person who dated that wretch, “I considered.

“Could be, because from what we’ve gathered, Sandro was the one who introduced them. He and Romulus became very close while they were in prison together. But we can’t count on that – it was certainly Nicole who was sending those letters to Samantha. We’ll stay alert,” Bonfim emphasized.

“Makes two of us,” Flavian leaned back in his chair.

“Well, but I have one more puzzle,” Bonfim continued. “We checked the security camera footage from all the stores that sell that chocolate and listed all identifiable customers who bought boxes of liquor chocolates, like the one Samantha received, within a week before the date she got hers. Thing is, no suspicious names came up, but I’d like you and Samantha to take a look

you might recognize someone. There aren’t many name fortunately this isn’t their best–selling chocolate.”

“Let me see,” I reached out and took the list.

I read through all ten pages. I scanned the names, flipping through without recognizing any of them until one caught my eye. But it had to be just a coincidence – it couldn’t be possible. I read through the rest of the list, and that was the only name I recognized. It would be absolute madness.

“You recognized someone, Henry.” Bonfim was too experienced a detective not to notice my expressions. “Who?”

“Bonfim, I did recognize someone, but it would be completely insane.” I argued. “She couldn’t possibly go this far.”
