Manuela’s POV

Since my lunch with Rick right after my birthday, a lot had happened. Months had passed, and finally, Joseph had been arrested by my detective, who was looking more handsome than ever. My relationship with Flavian was flowing naturally, without complications. Only my mother kept insisting on tormenting me frequently.

Time was passing very quickly, and I had been very busy. I started taking fewer calls from my mother, but whenever I did, she always ruined my day. She had been insisting that if I didn't return to my hometown, she would come and take me back by force. I had already told her I wouldn't return, and she couldn't force me, but I was still afraid she would come and drag me back. That's why I kept staying at Flavian's house, not worrying about time passing. We had been together for months, and it was time to think about going back to my place. Eventually, I would have to face my mother.

The truth was, I didn't want to return to my apartment, not after getting used to sleeping and waking up in Flavian's arms every day. But I needed to go back; we were just dating, and after all these months, he still didn't love me, though he showered me with attention and affection. It would be better for me to return home, so when he got tired of me, I wouldn't have to gather my things and run away. This troubled me, but only Rick knew about this insecurity. We had grown very close over the months and were always confiding in each other.

The good thing was that Samantha had invited me to live with her since aunt Pearl had finally moved in with her boyfriend, so I wouldn't be alone either. So I decided to go to my hometown and talk to my father, since he was the one who had rented the apartment for me, and he needed to sign the contract cancellation papers. I arranged with my father to visit the town over the weekend, but he asked me to stay at my brother's house because my mother had been worse than ever, and if she saw me in town, she would certainly find a way to prevent me from leaving.

"Little one, I don't like this, you going to your hometown alone knowing your mother wants to keep you there," Flavian said after putting my suitcase in my car on Saturday morning.

I had told Flavian I needed to talk to my father and it had to be in person, but I hadn't told him what it was about, and he didn't push to know. I would drive there and return early the next day.

"Big guy, I need to go. If I don't come back, you'll know she's trapped me, then you'll come get me," I said jokingly.

"That's exactly what I'll do, Manuela, so you better be here by five tomorrow afternoon," Flavian wasn't happy about my trip. "And today of all days when I'm on duty and can't go with you. Can't this trip wait?"

"No, it can't, big guy. I need my father to sign a document for me."

"I don't like being away from you."

"I don't either, but I need to go."

"Since there's no other way." I laughed at his grumpy expression. "Call me as soon as you arrive. And call me after you talk to your father. Call me before bed, when you wake up, and when you leave there. And if you run into your mother, call me."

"At this rate, I'll spend the whole day on the phone with you," I laughed at his concern.
