The days were passing by at a pleasant and peaceful pace. I loved my job, which was far more interesting in a big city than in a quiet small town. I had a beautiful girlfriend who drove me crazy and a really tight-knit group of friends. Everything was going great.

The only problem was Manu's mother, who kept calling to mistreat her daughter almost daily, so much that my little one started leaving her old phone turned off more and more. But today that crazy woman started early because my little one had forgotten to turn off the phone. And I couldn't help myself, I marked my territory right away, because that witch wasn't going to continue with this nonsense about marrying my little one to someone else.

Meanwhile, my peculiar family, who I was sure would make my life hell, was keeping absolutely quiet. I talked to my mother every week, and she remained quiet, only interested in knowing if I was doing well and complaining about Lexie. My father hadn't spoken to me since I moved, which I found strange. Far from thinking this was bad, I just couldn't believe my parents were accepting my choices and weren't plotting some way to force me to do what they wanted. Maybe Manu and I had more in common than we thought.

And I was right! The day promised to be tense after being awakened by that harpy on Manu's phone. I had just arrived at the police station when my older brother called. Raul was the type of person who didn't meddle in others' lives, valued his little kingdom's peace and quiet, and avoided taking sides in our parents' issues with me and my sister. As it happened, he was the exemplary son who fit into the model our parents’s thought was perfect, not because he let our parents control him, but simply because what he wanted in life aligned with our parents' interests.

"The perfect son deigning to call the problematic one? Something must be out of place," I joked when I answered the phone. We got along well, and since childhood, he had covered for me when I needed to do something without our parents knowing, even though he later pretended he knew nothing to avoid problems, he always gave me a little help on the sly.

"When you say it like that, it sounds like I only call you when things get ugly," he laughed on the other end of the line.

"No, brother, you also call me with the harbinger of chaos." Raul would always inform me about our parents' plans to make me fall in line, as our father liked to say.

"I think today I'm bringing you the harbinger of chaos," he said, turning serious.

"What is it?"

"Our father just left the company and he's heading your way. He said he'll call in all his contacts if necessary, but this time he's going to end your little hero adventure," Raul said seriously. He never got involved, but he didn't agree with what our parents were doing. "Brace yourself, brother, he's going to request your dismissal from the police force. That's what I heard him say."

"I can't believe he would do that?! He's taking this too far!"

"Yes, he is. I walked into his office and he was talking to the Secretary of Public Safety. Get ready, because a storm is coming." I snorted in anger. My father had excellent connections, but getting me removed from the police force would be quite difficult, and I was going to play the cards I had.

"Thanks for the warning, brother. I'll try to do some damage control. How are you doing?"

"Having problems. Now our parents have decided to make my life hell because they want grandchildren. But neither Paula nor I want kids right now - she's doing an important specialization to take over her parents' company. "Ah, welcome to the club of children who only give headaches." I laughed, imagining how annoyed my brother was having his peaceful life threatened.

"Of course I know. You two complement each other perfectly - you're all Zen and she's all electric, the best example of opposites attract."

"Yeah, she's amazing. I'm just saying that if our parents threaten my marriage, I'll rebel like you and Lexie did - I'll leave the company and let them talk to themselves." It was the first time I'd heard my brother consider the possibility of going against our parents.
