"Yeah, I asked once and he laughed before walking away. After that I never asked again. He was a cruel man." I whisper to myself but I know that Conner heard.

"Well you are safe now." I hum to myself knowing that I will never be safe as long as Derek is in the world.

"We should check up on Grace," I stand up and feel cold from the loss of heat Conner was emitting.

"Yeah, let's go." Conner stands and grabs my hand leading me back into the house. We go back to our room where Grace is still fast asleep. Conner goes and takes a shower so I sit on the edge of the bed watching Grace.

I don't know what I would do if I didn't have her in my life. I know that if I had a boy instead of a girl I wouldn't change a single choice I made. I would never allow a child to grow up in the environment that Derek kept me sheltered in. A child should never see their mother fighting everyday with the devil to stay alive, I child should never be introduced to the cruel reality that I lived in. a child should never go loveless.

Grace is surrounded by love and I am glad that it is the one thing that I can give her. I know it is the only gift I can give her and I hope that as she gets older she learns to cherish each and every moment in life because bad moments are never far behind.

I keep waiting for something to happen to burst this bubble that I am cocooned in, I am waiting for Derek to come and take back what belongs to him, but I am waiting for him to come back and kill me.

Conner

I stand there watching her knowing she is deep in thought. I have noticed whenever she is thinking about that monster her body tense up and she starts to shiver without her even knowing. All yesterday was perfect and I wish everyday could be like but I know it is not possible until Clare learn to heal and love. I can feel her trust for me through the mate bond and when I felt it a few weeks ago I was over the moon.

"Sorry." Her smile tells me that she didn't notice the change in me or she was putting on a brave face I imagine she dad to do many times before.

"Do you need to run?" My eyes widen at her suggestion. Running with your mate is a sacred thing to do. It shows your love a devotion for each other in both human and wolf form. I didn't think Clare wanted to run but I wouldn't turn down the offer. I nod my head like an eager little boy.

We take Grace downstairs leaving her with the twins before going into the woods.

"You change behind the tree. I will wait." When she disappear, I take off my cloths and shift into my dark brown wolf who is trying to take over my body. I wait for 5 minutes before I know something is wrong. It doesn't take us long to shift. It should happen in a matter of seconds. Shifting is as easy as walking. I shift back throwing on some pants as I walk in the direction Clare went.
