Brody felt secretly pleased and gloated, saying, “To tell you the truth, Valerie just wants to marry into a wealthy family. She couldn’t get any benefits from the Clark family anymore, so she set her sights on you.”

Brody sneered. “You could have married someone much better, maybe even the president’s daughter. Instead, you were deceived and ended up with a fake who isn’t even a true illegitimate daughter. If that gets out, people will laugh.”

Aiden didn’t even look back and walked away.

Valerie didn’t hear what Brody said after that.

Afraid of being discovered, she fled quickly and quietly, her heartbeat racing uncontrollably.

Aiden always kept his emotions tightly under control, which made it difficult for Valerie to read his mind.

Valerie wondered, ‘Did Aiden already know, or is he just so used to keeping his emotions hidden that I can never tell what he’s really thinking?”

Valerie felt deeply uneasy. She splashed water on her face in Aiden’s bathroom to calm herself down.

Just as she stepped out, Aiden walked in.

Seeing him, Valerie instinctively felt a little guilty. She forced a smile and said, “You’re back already? Aren’t you busy today?”

Aiden stared directly at her. His deep, dark eyes seemed like a night sky full of stars. He stepped forward, raised his hand, and pinched her cheek, tugging at her fake smile.

Valerie’s heart sank. She looked at him in panic. Even she didn’t realize just how nervous she looked right now.

Aiden’s gaze grew even colder. He leaned closer, and Valerie could clearly smell the faint scent of tobacco on him.

Hé said, “Busy. But something more important came up, so I came back.”

Valerie’s heart hung on a thread. Her mind raced. ‘Something more important?‘

She instinctively avoided his gaze and took a step back.

But before she could move far, his strong arm wrapped tightly around her waist.

Aiden lowered his eyes and looked at her. With one hand gripping her face, he forced her to look at him.

Their eyes met. Valerie could clearly see that behind his calm expression, a storm was brewing in his eyes. It was like he could devour her at any momen

Her body grew more rigid. She swallowed nervously and said, “I…”

“Mr. Aiden Walker, Mrs. Valerie Walker, dinner is ready.”

At the door, a servant called out, “Mr. Clark and Mr. Wesley Walker are also staying for dinner today. Mrs. Vivian Walker hopes you’ll come out soon.”

Aiden answered in a low voice, “Got it.”

The servant left quickly. But Valerie’s heart was pounding out of her chest.

Aiden let her go and said, “Let’s go.”

Her mind went blank, buzzing with confusion. His attitude gave nothing away.

Aiden didn’t say a word about what Brody had revealed. Perhaps he didn’t have time to mention it, or perhaps he was deliberately avoiding the topic.

Valerie thought there had to be a reason behind his avoidance. He didn’t confront her directly. He looked gloomy and frightening, but not once did he bring up the matter.

Just moments ago, she had still been thinking about how she could explain it with minimal damage if he asked her directly.

The nightmare of her past life and the kind of pain like falling endlessly into darkness still haunted her.

But now, all her mental preparations were for nothing. All her strength was stuck in her chest, neither rising nor falling.

Aiden left quickly.

Knowing she wasn’t in the right state of mind, Valerie took a moment to adjust her expression in the mirror before heading to the dining room.

She was originally worried that Brody would hint at something or say something inflammatory to provoke Aiden. Fortunately, he didn’t…

Instead, it was Wesley who glanced at her several times, his gaze layered with meaning. He said, “Valerie, you’re still a college student, right?”

Valerie smiled politely. “Yes, I’m in my third year.”

Wesley responded, “Oh, junior year, huh. Still so young. What about you, Valentina?”

Valentina smiled as well. “I’m two years behind because I fell behind in my studies. I’m only in my first year now.”

Wesley asked, “Why did you fall behind? Did you repeat a grade?”

Valentina lowered her head dejectedly. “Because of some things…”

Everett said with a heartbroken look, “She got lost when she was a child. It’s all my fault. I didn’t keep a close eye on her. We didn’t find her until she was eighteen. If only I had found her sooner, she wouldn’t have suffered so much…”

Valerie’s heart sank hard.

Vivian tensed. “How did it happen?”

“It was because we were too busy with business and neglected the children.” Alannah looked remorseful.

Vivian sympathized deeply and said with emotion, “Aiden was kidnapped when he was little too. He went through so much. It broke my heart… But that’s all in the past. Don’t be too sad.”

Alannah gave her a grateful smile and started chatting with her.

The two women got along well until Ruth gave a light cough and said, “Let’s eat.”

Vivian glanced awkwardly at her mother–in–law and fell silent.

But soon, a thought hit her. The lost daughter of the Clark family was supposed to be the biological one.

If Valentina was the biological daughter who got lost when she was little, that meant Valerie wasn’t their real daughter.

Vivian’s expression changed immediately.
