“Mr. Cameron, now that you’ve finally met Ms. Brooks… what do you think?” The assistant hesitated as if unsure whether to continue. 

Cameron’s hand paused mid–motion as he was cutting his steak. 

The usual easy smile on his face faded. After a moment, he let out a quiet sigh. “Let’s wait and see. I need more time with her.” 

“Understood.” The assistant nodded and slipped away without another word. 

Cameron set down his utensils and took a sip of water. His appetite had vanished. 

There was something about Caroline–something cautious, reserved. 

Caroline carried herself with a quiet carefulness, an instinctive restraint that had been shaped by years of being overlooked, dismissed, or perhaps even belittled. Even when she hid it well, he could still see it. 

Most people wouldn’t notice. But he did. 

He had spent a lifetime observing people, learning what made them tick. And from the moment he met

Cameron exhaled quietly, pushing down his emotions. 

By the time Caroline returned, his usual calm expression was back in place, giving nothing away. 

“It was a pleasure having dinner with you, Ms. Brooks,” he said with his usual charm. “I truly enjoyed our conversation. I’m already looking forward to our next meeting.” 

“You’re always welcome at our company, Mr. Cameron.” 

He smiled. “I’ll be back. But for now, I have a flight to catch.” 

Caroline frowned. “Didn’t you just arrive this morning?” 

“I did. And now I need to leave.” 

She hesitated. “So… you flew in just to meet me?”

I’m not anyone special–why would Cameron go out of his way to meet me? 

Maybe it was just his way of being polite. Someone like him probably knew exactly what to say to make people feel at ease. 

No point in reading too much into it. 

“Mr. Cameron, you really know how to make a person feel important,” she said with a light laugh. “Let me walk you out.” 

Cameron nodded. “Alright.” 

Outside, a sleek Maybach waited at the curb. As soon as Cameron appeared, his driver opened the door. 

“Goodbye, Mr. Cameron.” Caroline waved. “Safe travels and take care.” 

Cameron lowered the window slightly, gave her a final nod, and the car pulled away. 

She watched until the taillights disappeared down the road. 

At the same time, Cameron glanced back at her through the rearview mirror, watching until she was completely out of sight. 

The night had settled in. 

For some reason, she couldn’t shake the feeling that Cameron’s gaze carried something deeper–something she couldn’t quite define.
