It felt like a dream. Except for the fact that he had not slept the entire night and even though the sun rose up, nothing changed. Ella was still lying on the bed unconscious. Javier had kept a close eye on her, watching her the whole night and hoping that she would move a muscle or even better, open her eyes, and yet there had been nothing thus far. He would have been worried that he had lost her if it was not because of the steady rhythm of her heartbeat on the monitor.
Moving his gaze from Ella, he watched Damon and Tanner sleeping on the couch. Tanner was sleeping in a seating position while Damon put his head on Tanner’s thigh and occupied the rest of the sofa. Tanner had one hand over Damon’s eyes and forehead and under different circumstances, Javier would have laughed picturing Damon as a naughty brat and Tanner as his mother who tried to make him fall asleep.
Ella had great friends. Javier was very grateful for their presence. He was not sure he could have gone through the night without the two of them. Around seven in the morning, there was a soft knock on the door then followed by a nurse coming in with a notepad and a sphygmomanometer. “Good morning,” she greeted Javier and spared one look at Damon and Tanner who were still sleeping.
“Morning,” he greeted back and moved away so that the nurse could check on Ella. “How is she?” he asked once the nurse had done checking on Ella and wrote down some things on her notepad.
“I am afraid the answer will be too complicated for that simple question,” said the nurse with a small sigh. “Doctor Sawthorne will come in fifteen minutes. He will give you a better answer. However, I could assure you that physically, Ella is getting better. She is surviving.”
“Then why is she still unconscious?” Javier muttered his question softly but loud enough for the nurse to hear.
“Doctor Sawthorne will explain fully to you. Now excuse me. I have to make my rounds.”

About five minutes since the nurse had left, both Eleanor and Derek had arrived almost at the same time. Javier lifted his eyebrows at their timely arrival but did not comment on anything.
“How is she?” Eleanor sat beside the bed and held Ella’s hand with two hands.
“We do not know for sure but the nurse said that she is getting better,” answered Javier with no emotion. It was as if his feelings and energy had been drenched out and there was nothing left.
Damon, who had finally awoken, put one arm around Eleanor. “She is going to be alright, Eleanor. Ella is strong.”
