“Brother?” Clarabelle tilted her head and frowned before calling her brother again by his full name, louder this time. “Javier Rainard Summers!”
Her brother who had been staring blankly ahead this whole time with a forlorn look on his face blinked then turned his gaze to Clarabelle. “Are you trying to give me a heart attack, Clarabelle Anneliese Summers?”
“I am not,” she replied back with a huff. “Stop calling me by my full name. You know I hate my middle name.”
“You started it,” commented Javier quietly.
“Only because you did not listen to me. I have been talking to you for half an hour and I have asked you twice. None of which you replied.”
Javier gave her a rueful smile. “I am sorry.”
“I know you do not want to think about the worst case scenario, Brother,” Clarabelle reached out and placed her hand carefully on top of her brother’s hand on the table, “but you have to so when it comes, you will be prepared.”
“If it comes,” he corrected, quite stubbornly.
His sister shook her head. “Still, it does not change the fact that you should think about it.” She grabbed the cup of chamomile tea and took a small sip. Her stomach had been upset the whole day and she was not sure if it was food poisoning or if there was a monster living in her belly. But she had decided to come to the hospital to see her brother first because she had heard from her parents who had visited Ella while she was still unconscious about how miserable her brother truly was. If there had not been another encounter with the stupidly charming Dean Westminster, she would have come sooner. As she placed the cup back on its saucer, she gently asked, “What happens if her memory does not return?”
Jerking his gaze back up to his sister’s face, Javier replied curtly, “It will.”
“I know we all wish for that, Brother. But what if it will not?” She held her gaze and stared at the pair of blue eyes that looked somewhat identical to hers but a few shades darker. “What if she lost her memory forever?”
“Her memory is going to come back.” He just hoped that when it did, she would be alright. He knew she would grieve for their lost baby but he really hoped that it would not cause her health to falter further. Since the day she had awoken up, he had been thinking about ways to prove to her that they were truly engaged. He was thinking of bringing her back to her flat, perhaps if she had seen how they had lived together, she would believe him. He had even thought of showing her those blasted photos that Draven’s Head of Design and Landscape, Maria Gonzales, had once taken to blackmail Ella into leaving Javier. Or perhaps some happier photos like when she had sung Happy Birthday to him in his birthday party eleven months ago or when he had proposed to her three months ago. They had so much memories and he wanted to show these momentos to her in the hope that by seeing all of these she would regain some recollection. Most importantly, he wished that she could remember that he was her fiancé, that they truly were dating regardless of the status of their working relationship. “It will,” he said it one more time to himself as if by saying that, he got a new sense of hope and strength.
“I really hope so, Brother.” Clarabelle gave her a reassuring smile but her eyes looked sad and unsure. She knew how much her brother had endured in the past, his failed relationship with Aimee and some other meaningless relationships. Ella was the only person who had made him believe in love again. Clarabelle knew her brother was happier because of Ella and now seeing him like this, it made her heart aching. “Have you talked to her about the arrangements once she was being discharged?”
He shook his head slowly. “I will talk to her today. Dr. Marc had given her permission to leave. He said the sooner the better because physically, she is fine, and being at home might help her remember better.”
“Is it alright for Mom to visit her? She has been telling me to ask you this. She is very worried about Ella,” Clarabelle sighed, dropping her gaze to the ground, “but with Ella not remembering you, she might not remember Mom either. I doubt she even remembers me.”
“I think it might be best if Mom does not come. I do not want Ella to feel overwhelmed with all of this.” He gave out a dry laugh with a pained look on his face. “She is already overwhelmed by the fact that I am her fiancé and she works for me.”
