Javier stared blankly ahead. Even though his body was in his office, his mind traveled elsewhere, preferably in a small flat downtown where Ella was located at the moment. Even though he did not fully agree with what Damon and Tanner had suggested — mainly because he did not think he could leave her be especially when she seemed to be in need of his help, he felt that he should give it a try. Even if it pained him, even if it broke his heart to be apart from her.
The look on her face showed how little she remembered him and he was afraid if he was giving her some space, she would forget him altogether. How would someone remember when there was no reminder at all? How would she remember him if he was not even around? Going to the office this afternoon had been difficult enough. He wished he could stay with her, at least until this evening when he needed to leave her be for a few days and moved back to his house. But the office had been quite abandoned for the last two weeks. He practically had been camping at her hospital room especially while she had been unconscious. Thankfully one of his brothers, Ros, had stepped in and helped him manage his business until he could return back to the office. After all, there was no use in him being in the office when he could not even focus on the work at hand and was busy thinking of Ella.
Javier let out a deep, exasperated sigh and closed his eyes. He had informed Ros that he would be back today, he had thought that he was ready now that Ella was out of the hospital, and yet even when she was evidently safe and sound at home, he was still thinking of her. It was as if his mind could not leave him alone and his own memories tortured him to no end.
Engulfed in his own mind, he had not realized that the door of his office was swung open until he heard his sister's voice. “I will have you know that I am a successful woman and even though my publishing house is considered new, it will be bigger and it will be a huge success.”
Javier opened one eye and lifted one eyebrow as he stared at his sister who was standing in the middle of his room with both of her hands on her waist. “Your point is?”
"I am needed in my own office, Brother." Clarabelle sighed. "Why am I here covering your phone? Don’t you have some other secretary? Or could you just hire a temp?”
"No," he replied curtly. The last secretary that he had hired turned out to be a psychological disaster named Maria Gonzales and the previous secretaries before Ella, well, they had not been in their right mind either considering they had tried to make their way into his pants. He thought it was usually the other way around. "I have asked the HR people to get me a male secretary. Once they manage to find me a decent one, you are off the hook." He paused and locked his eyes with his sister. "Until then, I am afraid I am in need of your help, Little Sister."
Clarabelle, who had been ready to barge in and demand her freedom, bit her bottom lip. Upon seeing how terrible her brother actually looked right now, she knew she could not leave him. Clearly, he had not been ready to go back to the office and she realized that his work might be the only distraction he needed at the moment. She had overheard him asking Pedro to inform his butler to prepare his room for tonight. Without even asking her brother, she could tell that he planned to move back to his house. In all honesty, she tried her best not to meddle with his current predicament since Javier was not the type to ask for help even when he needed it thus cheering him up and helping him at work might be her only chance.
"Fine," she responded with a small sigh. "No need to find a male secretary or a temp. I will cover Ella’s desk until she returns."
Her brother gave her a small smile. "Thank you."
"You have an hour before your next meeting with Lunar Production. I have printed their proposal and have our team look at it." Clarabelle placed the folder carefully on his desk. Javier opened the folder and began to read. "They have marked a few things that might be an issue. Our finance team has also calculated the feasible cost that might occur should we decide to proceed with the proposal." She put the second folder on his desk next to the first one. "I have asked them to create a cash flow projection for the duration of the contract which is five years and convert the cost from CNY to USD. They are still working on it and I will hand you the numbers once they are ready."
"Not bad, Little Sister," he commented, nodding his head in satisfaction. "You are just as efficient as Miss Stanford and to consider that this is your first day, I must say that I am impressed."
His sister blushed, shaking her head. "No. I actually just followed the instructions —more like a manual, really, that I found in the drawer. I think Ella has prepared it should someone is going to replace her. She put in detail what needs to be done and prepared for different types of cases that you have to deal with every day."
Javier's smile turned into a proud grin. "She did submit her resignation before but then she decided to stay. I think what you found was her handover files to Maria."
Before her brother's good mood was tainted by any sorrowful remark, she quickly changed the subject. "After the meeting, you only need to go to the new opera house and see one performance. Although the manager insisted on you watching the whole performance, I have informed him that you do not have the time."
