The sincerity in her voice made me say yes, before I could even think everything through.
Noah's cheer and Faith's satisfied smile were worth it. He grabbed me by my hand and led me inside the house, where the other kids were already waiting for dinner.
A table was already set and Noah demanded that I sat beside him to which I gladly obeyed as I had no idea how to behave. I did not have to worry about my manners, because the kids made it clear very quickly that they were as loud and as messy as outside. I loved it.
With a big smile I observed how Noah and little Charlie had a battle about how much chicken they could eat, how the girls told each other jokes that made them laugh out loud and how Faith was asking everybody about their day, just like a mom.
It struck me then that I had no idea where I actually was. Faith seemed to be a little too old to have so many kids with such a young age, but I did not want to judge too quickly. Furthermore most of the kids looked nothing alike or like Faith.
"Okay kids, you know the drill.", Faith then said and I saw almost all the kids rushing out of the dining room, while two kids helped Faith and me bringing the dishes into the kitchen. After their apparent task was done, they left Faith and me alone in the kitchen.
As I started to load the diswasher Faith admonished me gently, "You don't have to to that Sophia."
I just smiled at her and responded, "That's the least I can do after enjoying your dinner."
Faith returned my smile and for a few seconds we worked side by side.
"I'm sure you must have figured out that we're the pack's orphanage.", Faith then told me, "And it means a lot to me and even more to the kids that you spend the day with them."
My heart instantly went out to the kids.
I smiled at her, thinking about my earlier thoughts about the kids looking nothing alike, and softly answered, "Noah found me and honestly it was one of the best days of my life."
Something like understanding passed between us and I felt myself relax further.
"Sophia, can you read us a story?", Noah shouted from somewhere and I instantly looked at Faith for directions.
She waved me away and said, "We're already done in the kitchen and the kids would love for you to read to them."
So I left her to it and joined the kids upstairs. It was like entering a fairytail. The girls and the boys each shared a room which was decorated with ballerinas or cars. You could feel how comfortable everyone was and I let myself get infected with the coziness.
The kids decided on a story I then read to them and after the story ended each one of them had fallen asleep.
I knew I should leave, but I could not bring myself to rose from my place close to Noah's bed. So I stayed for a few more minutes and soaked up the feelings of peace and happiness.
After our goodbye, Milena led me to the pack house again chattering about her apparently dull day.
"How was your day?", she then wanted to know and I smiled at her and answered, "It was the best."
And it was true. Even though I had my heart broken this morning I could not help but have more positive feelings about this day, which made me realize again, that Levin and I could not have been meant for each other.
"There you are Sophia.", Levke's concerned voice reached my ears and I smiled guiltily at her.
"I'm sorry if you were worried, I spent the day with the kids from the orphanage."
Her eyes softened and she muttered something I could not understand.
However then she said, "Lennart wants to speak with you."
A cold shiver ran down my spine, because I could only imagine what the Alpha would want to talk to me about.
My wolf whimpered in my mind, she did not want to return to my old pack as well. I took a deep breath, said my thanks to Milena for picking me up and bravely followed Levke to Lennart's office.
