Maren

Maren swung the door wide and was greeted by an unexpected guest.

There stood Wilbur, surrounded by Bobby, Cullum, Nadia, and William.

They were all fixated on Wilbur, who basked in their attention. Cullum gingerly held a ticket, examining it with such

reverence as if it were a fragile relic that could crumble under too firm a grip.

Nadia’s gaze on Wilbur was filled with adoration, her face lit up in a dreamy daze. Even William offered Wilbur a nod that

spoke volumes of his endorsement.

Wilbur couldn’t mask his smugness.

At that moment, Maren stepped into the room.

Wilbur’s recent grievances with Maren had festered, and upon his arrival, he had blown her recent actions at the academy

out of proportion, painting her as an absolute embarrassment.

Unsurprisingly, the family’s faces clouded over at the sight of Maren.

“Maren! How dare you show your face here after the chaos you caused today?” Bobby approached her aggressively. “Look at

yourself. Challenging the dean? Are you on a mission to drag our family name through the mud?”

Cullum’s face was a mask of severity. He was taken aback by the news of Maren’s rash actions. And she might have even

provoked Hades. “Maren, you need to go and apologize to the dean. Nobody else can fix this mess for you!”

“Maren, we honestly expected better from you.” Even the normally quiet William couldn’t hide his disapproval, shaking his

head as he did.

“This matter concerns me alone, and I’d appreciate it if you’d stay out of it.”

Maren’s dismissive response only fueled the family’s anger further.

Bobby was livid. “You need to learn your place!”

His anger escalated to the point where he moved aggressively towards Maren, but Wilbur intervened just in time.

“Are you available tomorrow night, Maren?”

“I am not,” Maren replied curtly, not interested in whatever Wilbur was plotting.

A shadow fell over Wilbur’s face. Was Maren still playing hard to get?

He had an agenda. Embarrassed by Maren previously, he was determined to restore his dignity.

He cleared his throat and continued, “There’s a major car race in Baimsa tomorrow night. It’s a significant event, attracting all the key players from the city. It wasn’t easy, but I managed to secure a ticket.”

He hadn’t actually planned on inviting Maren. Doing so would make it seem like he cared about her. Yet, he believed he

could manipulate her into pleading for the invitation.

Therefore, he suggested, “If you go apologize to the dean and drop that absurd challenge, I might consider bringing you

along to the event.”

He was convinced no one could turn down such an alluring offer.

However, he never truly planned to bring Maren along. His aim was to put her in her place and let her know that her efforts to capture his attention were in vain.

This thought considerably brightened Wilbur’s spirits.

“I have prior commitments.” Maren’s refusal was firm and cold.

Wilbur felt a sting of embarrassment.

A ticket to the South Hill Racing Tournament?

Maren had her own invitation. Why would she require one from him?

The Onyx was a top force in Baimsa, and Maren was likely a major player among the elites there.

What reason did she have to accept his invitation?

Bobby, thinking Maren didn’t grasp the event’s significance, emphasized it once more.

He awaited Maren’s reaction, expecting some sign of astonishment, but she merely responded, “So?”

Her expression was one of complete indifference, bordering on irritation.

Bobby exploded in anger.

“If you have nothing else of importance, I’ll be in my room.” Maren didn’t linger a moment longer and headed for the

staircase leading to her room.

Left behind, the rest of the group simmered with frustration.

As Maren climbed the stairs, she could still hear their heated discussions below, now mingled with Nadia’s seemingly

supportive remarks.

“Wilbur, Bobby, don’t be too harsh on her. She was determined enough to challenge the dean today. It’s a lot to expect her to just apologize and retract her challenge so soon after making it. That’s a tough pill for someone like her to swallow.”
