Chapter 17 The Invitation
Had the boss really just stepped down?
He’d willingly passed leadership to a woman, of all people?
And he had made that decision so casually?
Had it been anyone else, they might’ve laughed it off as nonsense or questioned his sanity.
But Simon was never known for rash decisions.
Only Maren seemed utterly unbothered, a playful smirk dancing across her lips.
“What are you all waiting for? Pay your respects to our new boss,” Simon instructed sternly, eyeing the motionless group.
Westley and the other Onyx members jolted awkwardly.
Exchanging hesitant glances, they gauged Simon’s graveness before reluctantly bowing to Maren, their actions strained and
uncomfortable.
“Boss…” Their voices barely rose above whispers.
“See? I wasn’t wrong. They don’t even listen to you.” Maren raised an eyebrow, smirking.
Anger flared briefly among the men. Maren’s casual criticism had stung their pride.
Their hesitance reflected poorly on Simon.
Noticing Simon’s darkening mood, Westley and the others stiffened their spines and shouted, “Boss!”
Their unified voices resounded, carrying respect this time.
Maren nodded approvingly. Her expression turned playful as she said openly, “If anyone doubts me, now’s your chance.
Step up, fight me, and if you win, the position is yours. That’s how we handle things from now on.”
Not one Onyx member dared to accept the offer.
The memory of her ruthless takedown of the Zopilotes lingered too vividly. Brave talk aside, none wanted to court death.
“Good. No objections then. Understand clearly–if anyone slacks off, don’t expect mercy,” Maren declared.
Westley felt an involuntary shiver.
Stepping forward, Simon said cautiously, “Boss, the Onyx is one of the top five gangs in Baimsa. Although our stronghold is
the west district, our influence spreads widely–north, east, south. We own casinos, security companies, nightclubs—”
“Enough with the detailed rundown,” Maren cut in, noting Simon’s lengthy explanations. “You’re second–in–command now.
Continue handling daily matters. Spare me the minor details.”
“But that’s not how we’ve always done things,” Simon said, stunned.
The Onyx had been his life’s accomplishment, painstakingly crafted over many years. Yet Maren seemed indifferent to

Westley and his crew were equally baffled. Just moments ago, they’d worried about losing everything to an outsider. Yet
now she appeared uninterested, casually returning authority back to Simon. Was she mocking them, or simply playing
games?
Typically, any newly appointed gang leader would strive, to oust their predecessor immediately. That was how gang politics
worked.
“The Onyx was your creation. You understand its heart better than anyone. Who else would be better suited to guide it forward?” What Maren said caught everyone off guard.
“And you’re not worried I’ll betray you?” Simon studied her intently, his expression uncertain.
Without missing a beat, Maren responded confidently, “Trust is mutual. You’ve extended yours, and now I’m giving you
mine.”
“Boss…” Simon murmured, visibly moved. Though he’d officially passed the torch earlier, this was the first moment he
genuinely recognized Maren’s authority.
Even Westley and his companions felt stirred by the unexpected sincerity Maren displayed.
“Alright, enough sentimental talk. I’ve got other matters to handle. I’ll reach out if needed.”
After exchanging numbers, Maren began walking away.
Simon paused briefly before catching up. “Hold on, Boss. Take this invitation to tomorrow night’s South Hill Racing Tournament. It’s an exclusive event hosted by the Angels of Death–Baimsa’s top gang–to welcome a high–ranking guest
from the Sovereign Underworld. I’d be honored if you attended and witnessed the Onyx’s true capabilities.”
Simon felt compelled to validate Maren’s trust. She had identified their weaknesses; now he was determined to show her their strength.
Maren accepted the invitation, her eyebrow raised slightly in surprise. Even racing events now required formal invitations?
“I’ll see you there,” she replied briefly.
Moments later, Maren left the black market behind.
Westley and the others lingered, silently watching Maren’s departure until she disappeared. Finally, someone asked, “Simon,
honestly, do you think she’s up to this challenge?”
Simon remained silent. Yet deep in his gut, he knew Maren wasn’t a woman to underestimate.
None of the Onyx members had a clue that Simon’s decision would soon put their gang on the map–first across the
country, then far beyond. But that was a story for another time.
