I had planned everything so perfectly with Romulus It was a foolproof plant. He would make little Samantha disappear, and I would have time to seduce and wrap my golden goose, Henry, around my finger.
I arranged to meet that annoying Pearl at a remote mall, so there’d be no risk of her running into anyone she knew. I made up a story about not having a car and how this mall was close to my house. The Idiot believed me and agreed to meet there, so I wouldn’t have to waste money on a taxi or take the bus.
As soon as she arrived, I asked to borrow her phone to call “my daddy,” claiming mine was dead. Being ever so helpful, she lent me her unlocked phone. Very carefully, I called Romulus, and after ending the call, I returned the phone. She placed it on the table and turned to call the waiter. It was easier than I thought I didn’t even need to steal her whole purse.
One of my brother’s guys was already nearby to help us. He walked by and snatched the phone without her noticing, taking it to someone who could unlock any device and where Romulus was waiting. Romulus would lure little Samantha by saying he was with her mother. I just had to keep annoying Pearl occupied until Romulus gave me the all–clear.
Romulus left home with me; we’d already negotiated with the two cops who’d been watching my apartment for days. We paid them to look the other way. Everything was going according to plan.
But to our surprise and misfortune, that kid showed up. He didn’t know me, but he was looking at me strangely. And I knew exactly who he was – he looks so much like his mother and uncle, with those big, expressive green eyes.
Enzo is a very bold kid. He butted into my business with Pearl and ruined our plans when he called little Samantha. She hadn’t reached the meeting spot with Romulus yet. I’d warned Romulus to set the meeting place closer to where she worked, but he wanted to be near the hill for a quick getaway, and he was too confident nothing would go wrong. The usual problem – overconfidence.
When I saw the kid calling Samantha, I waited for them to get distracted and quickly slipped away from the mall. Romulus would be furious because our plan had gone down the drain, everything went wrong at the last minute. I called him and told him what happened, and he raged, just as I expected. I told him to disappear because the police would surely come after him. He told me he was heading to the hill and would find another way to get Samantha later.
I went back to my apartment and was already thinking it might be better to lay low in the hill for a while, since that kid could recognize me if he saw my photo. He looked at me in a way that suggested he knew I was being more than just fake with that annoying Pearl. But then my phone rang.
“What is it, Sandro?” I answered, stressed out.
“Nick, what were you and Romulus up to?” Sandro was agitated.
“He was supposed to grab the woman and take her to the hill today, but it went wrong and I told him to head up there.” I told him straight up because lying to Sandro or trying to stall him was the worst thing anyone could do.
“I know what you did. My soldier already told me. But real talk, you sent the accountant up there at the worst possible time.” Sandro said coldly.
“Why? What happened?” I got nervous right away.
“Cops were in the hill, there was a shootout, and the accountant got screwed. He and two others went to meet their maker.” Sandro was very serious.
“Romulus is dead?” I asked in disbelief. “What were the cops doing up there?”
“They came to serve a warrant. But my soldiers weren’t going to let them up just like that. They opened fire, cops shot back, and the accountant took the eternal sleep. They also arrested a bunch of my employees, including my manager. Now I need a manager and I only trust my sister. You’re gonna have to go up to the hill.” Sandro wasn’t giving me a choice; it was an order.
“Fine.” I sighed. “After today’s mess, I was thinking about spending some time up there anyway.”

“Then it’s settled. Get up there today and get the house in order. Iwant everything running smooth. And don’t even think about giving me a heart attack – I know how much you love money, but people will be watching you up there.” Sandro warned, and I wasn’t crazy enough to pocket even a cent from him; Sandro was cruel and merciless.
