I was relieved to see my mother was okay. It was incredibly lucky that Enzo ran into her one of those things flrat nobody can explain, where some call it luck and others divine providence. But can definitely say this kid saved me again. After they told everything that happened at the mall and Henry confirmed that the Nicole who was with my mother was the same Nicole who was his ex–girlfriend, everything made sense.

And we were heading to the police station – my mother, Enzo, Henry, and me. Honestly, I just wanted to go home, but Flavian asked us to come there, so there was no way around it.

“Henry, why did Flavian ask us to go to the police station?” I asked still not accepting that I couldn’t go home.

“Sam, you were the victim of Romulus’s setup. It was a fake kidnapping, true, but clearly intended to force you to go to him. Plus, your mother’s phone was stolen and used for this.” Henry repeated the same thing, but I felt he was hiding something

from me.

“I want to go home,” I said, pouting.

“Samantha, you’re acting like a stubborn child,” my mother scolded me, and Henry smiled at that.

“Come on, aunt, don’t spoil my fun. I’ve never been to a police station before,” Enzo said excitedly.

“Oh my goodness, Enzo! You shouldn’t be so interested in going there. Your mother will kill me for this. I don’t know how I let you convince me,” Henry complained.

“She won’t kill you, uncle. Besides, I’m the one who saved aunt Sam, again, and I have to tell the story to the detective,” Enzo was feeling pretty proud of himself, and I couldn’t help but laugh.

We arrived at the police station, which was much busier than usual. We were taken straight to Flavian’s office, where he was already waiting for us.

“There she is!” Flavian stood up and came to hug me. “Woman, you’re quite a handful, you know.”

“Tell me about it,” Henry joked.

“Sit down, I need to tell you what happened,” Flavian said, and after greeting everyone one by one, he sat in his chair. “Sam, after Enzo alerted Henry about what was happening, Henry called me and told me everything. We traced the cell tower signal from Romulus’s phone and discovered he was at Pipote Hill. I was already there on another operation, and when we checked, we found that Romulus was among the criminals we had in custody.”

“Was Romulus arrested?” I asked anxiously, with a glimmer of hope.

“Sam, there was a shootout, and Romulus was killed in the confrontation,” Flavian spoke slowly, choosing his words carefully.

“Dead?” I asked while processing the information, and Flavian confirmed with a nod. “I can’t say I’m sad about this. Am I a horrible person for feeling relieved?”

“No, Sam, you’re not a horrible person.” Flavian laughed. “But I’d like you to see the body so we can be absolutely certain it’s him. We found his ID and confirmed it through the photo, but I want you to make the identification. It might be excessive caution on my part, but I’d like to do this. You won’t see ang blood or anything, he’ll even look like he’s sleeping. Can you handle that?”

“Of course, Flavian. Just tell me where and when. I have no problem looking at that corpse.” I’d even spit in his face if I could – he was surely burning in hell by now.

“Great. The medical examiner’s office is right next door, I’ll escort you there. Shall we? Flavian stood up.

We left the police station and entered the medical examiner’s building, which was indeed right next door. Flavian led us to where they kept the bodies and talked to the coroner, who smiled at me in a friendly way.

My mother stayed outside with Enzo, who was frustrated about not being allowed in to see the bodies. He was curious about everything there and kept bombarding Flavian with questions. Teenagers could be so weird!

I went in with Flavian and Henry. The smell of formaldehyde mixed with death burned my nostrils; the room was freezing and silent. The medical examiner pointed me to a table where a body lay covered with a white sheet. I approached and looked at Flavian.

“Whenever you’re ready, Sam,” Flavian said gently.

I gathered my courage and lifted the sheet. That was Romulus, and he really did look like he was sleeping.

“Burn in hell, you jerk!” I couldn’t help myself. I didn’t spit in his face, but I couldn’t hold back my words.

“Well, that confirms it’s definitely Romulus,” Flavian smiled at me.

“He’s the devil himself,” I said and covered his head back with the sheet. “Thank you, doctor. Feel free to slice him up good–he wasn’t worth anything anyway.” I told the doctor, who started laughing.
