I went with Rick to the break room to get some coffee. I really needed to talk to someone, but Catherine was at home because of her pregnancy and Joseph’s threats, and Sam already had enough problems too. So I didn’t want to burden the girls with this drama, and I didn’t want to call Flavian because of my mother’s

tantrums.

“So, sweetie, what happened?” Rick placed a coffee mug in front of me and sat next to me at the floor’s break room table.

For half an hour, I talked, venting to him about how my mother treated me, about how I had left home practically like a fugitive, about buying a car – well, I talked about everything. He listened to me attentively. “Manu, you know your mother is toxic and abusive, don’t you?” Rick looked at me and realized the weight his words carried.

“Yes, Rick, I know, but she’s my mother, the woman who gave me life. How do you distance yourself from your own mother?” I said, feeling a lump forming in my throat.

“By doing what you did – moving out, learning to take care of yourself, and if necessary, not answering the phone.”

“I wish things were different, Rick.”

“I know, Little Key. But look on the bright side, you’re not alone anymore. You have all of us who love you and will always be there for you. And you have the detective who, from what you said earlier, is the perfect guy.” I smiled at Rick, and he was right. I had gained so much since coming to the city.

“You’re right. I’m going to put a stop to this situation with my mother and stop answering every time she calls.”

“That’s it, she can only affect you if you let her.” Rick squeezed my hand on the table. “Well, now let’s be practical, let’s start with the money. I think you should take your money out of that bank. I can call the manager of the bank we use here at the company, and he can open an account for you. What do you think?” Rick suggested.

“That would be great, Rick. But I have to withdraw the money from the account before three in the afternoon, or she’ll leave me with nothing.” I was sure she would do that.‘

“Wait.” Rick took out his own cell phone and made a call. “Good afternoon, Magellan.” He greeted the person who answered on the other end. “I need a very special favor for the new executive secretary here at the company. I need you to open an account for her, but she needs to be able to operate this account before three this afternoon. Is that possible?” Rick listened for a moment. “That’s wonderful! Can you come here? Excellent. We’re waiting for you.” Rick hung up the phone and smiled. “Look how lucky we are, he’s in the finance department with Mari. He’s coming up now to open your account. As soon as it’s open, you can use it. The card will take a few days to be delivered to you, but you can use the money in other ways, and the branch is right next to the company.”

“Thank you for the advice.” Rick squeezed my hand once more with a sweet smile on his lips.

At that moment, Patrick burst into the break room like a hurricane. He looked at me very seriously while speaking on his phone.

“She’s here. She doesn’t look well. I don’t know. I’ll pass her the phone.” Patrick handed me the phone. “It’s Flavian.”

With trembling hands, I took the phone. I had barely put it to my ear when I heard Flavian on the other end of the line.

“Little one, what happened?” Flavian asked, and I could hear the urgency in his voice.

“My mother called and made a scene, Flavian,” I explained.

“Is your cell phone turned off?”

“Yes, I don’t want to talk to her, and she’ll keep calling.

“Hmm. I was worried. Are you okay?”

“Honestly, no. She destroys me when she does these things.”

“Why did she fight with you?”

“Because of the car. But, Flavian, don’t worry. She always does these things.”

“I do worry. From your voice, I can tell you were crying, and I won’t let her hurt you, even if she is your mother.” His concern and desire to protect me made me smile.

“Thank you for caring.‘

“Beautiful little one, I care and I’m going to take care of you. I’m heading there now.”

“You don’t need to, Flavian. You have to work, and so do I. We’ll see each other at the end of the day.”

“Are you sure? I’m not comfortable knowing you’re not okay.”

“I’m sure. And Rick and Patrick are here keeping an eye on me.”

“I don’t like being away from you now, knowing you’re not well,” he insisted, and I could tell from his tone that he was truly concerned.

“But we have to work.”

“Alright. I’ll see you at the end of the day. Will your phone stay off?”

“Yes, it will.”
