I arrived at the office today just like my former boss, singing! I grabbed a coffee from the break room and sat at my desk ready to conquer the world. I was happier than I had ever been before.

“So Detective Moreno is making sweet little Manu sing? I looked up to see Patrick smiling at me. “Is he that good, Manu?” Patrick was amused by my mood.

“Oh Patrick, so desperate for gossip, huh?!” Rick was laughing at his own boss.

“It’s not gossip, Rick, we need information about Flavian since it’s impossible to get anything out of him, that’s all.” Patrick tried to justify.

“Patrick, just admit it, you’re a gossip.” Rick didn’t miss the chance to tease Patrick.

“I’m not a gossip Rick, I’m a historian of other people’s lives.” It was impossible not to laugh at Patrick.

“Pat, just because I like you, I’ll tell you.” Patrick got excited when I said this and sat on my desk.

“Tell me, little Manu, open your heart to me. Tell me everything!” Patrick was terribly curious.

“The detective is that good and much more!” I said in a confessional tone. “Now, go work to earn my salary. You won’t get anything else out of me.”

“Come on, Manu, this weakens our friendship. I was hoping you’d give me details.” Patrick put on a sad face. He was such a drama person. “I’ll forgive you only because I like you. I’m glad you and Flavian are getting along, he’s a good guy.” Patrick winked at me and smiled as he walked toward his office, followed by Rick.

My big guy really was an amazing person, and I was more than happy with him. But, as all good things came to an end quickly, my phone rang and it was my mother, surely with some complaint, as always.

“Hi, mom. Everything okay?” I answered calmly.

“You can start explaining yourself, Manuela! Why did you touch the money your grandfather left you? And to buy a car, of all things?” My mother was screaming furiously on the other end of the line.

“Because I’m studying at night and it’ll be safer for me to have a car to get around than wandering the streets at night.” I replied calmly, certain she would understand. “But how do you know I bought a car?”

“Do you even know how to drive, Manuela?” My mother seemed to be conducting the Spanish Inquisition.

“Yes, mom. I got my driver’s license after I moved here. Can you answer the question I asked you?” I was almost losing my patience.

“Well, you’re turning out worse than expected! Look here, Manuela, just because you ran away from home with your dear father’s support doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want. As soon as this little college thing is over, you’re coming back home, and if you’re lucky enough that a good man still wants you, you’ll get married.”

A good man or a man you choose?” And just like that, she managed to make me furious.

“Manuela, show me some respect, I’m your mother! And yes, a man I choose so there’s no risk of you marrying some dimwit who won’t be able to keep you in line.”

“That explains it.” I was trying very hard to stay calm. “Mom, I’m not returning the car. And as far as I’m concerned, Ida and Jenna can say whatever they want.”
