Javier walked towards one of the convenience stores at the side of the road and entered as the glass doors of Seven Eleven slid open. He went straight to the line of display refrigerators at the back of the store and opened the glass door to pick up a carton of milk then headed to the cashier. He was checking his phone while waiting in the line when someone called him from behind. Upon turning, he realized that it was none other than Maria Gonzales, the secretary he had once fired for threatening Ella and causing ruckus surrounding his relationship with Ella.
“Well, hello, Javier. How has life been treating you?” Maria tossed her hair to one side and combed it using her free hand while her other hand was carrying her purse. Her nails were long and painted red as if they wished to intimidate people.
His response was just a mere nod. After all that she had done, he simply did not wish to waste his time on empty conversation with her. Then as if he was being reminded that she was a pawn to his brother — in which he had yet to get the confirmation, he clenched his jaw and engaged her in a conversation. “What do you want?”
“I am just getting a pack of cigarettes. My daily dose. You know how I am a two packs a day woman.”
Javier pursed his lips to keep his mouth tightly shut. At least now he knew who had clogged the toilet with cigarettes buts at the female restroom on the thirtieth floor. He recalled Ella was telling him about this issue the other day when she had asked his permission to use his executive bathroom. Of course, he had told her that it was given considering she was his fiancé, that she need not ask for it to use it. And after all the talk about what was his was hers too, she had finally used it.
Maria pointed her forefinger at the cart of milk he was carrying and commented, “You are coming to get milk for your coffee? I thought you take yours black.” She chuckled as if she found something funny about the sight of him carrying a cart of milk and waiting in line at a convenience store. “Don’t you have people you could ask to buy that for you?” Before he could even reply, she gasped. Her eyes lit. “Let me guess. This is for Ella isn’t it? I bet only she could boss you around.”
“Cut to the chase, Maria. You still have not answered my question. I asked again, what do you want?”
The guy in front of him had finished paying so Javier moved forward and put the cart of milk on the flat surface then handed his card to the guy behind the cash register. Once the transaction was done, he slid his card into his pocket and picked up the cart of milk. He stepped aside and gave one look at Maria before walking away and out of the convenience store. Right outside, he turned left, heading towards his building. His phone rang and it was his sister Clarabelle. “What is it this time?” he asked as soon as he picked up the call.
“Hello to you too, Brother,” said Clarabelle, sounding a little annoyed. “Why do you always assume that I messed up whenever I call you?”
“Well, don’t you? I am merely saving you some time so you do not have to sweet talk me into helping you.” A smile formed on his face. Even though he would never admit it, he kinda liked being called by Clarabelle every now and then. When they all had been young, his younger brothers asked for his help sometimes but now that they were all grown men, they had stopped. So only Clarabelle who would bother her older siblings. But usually his little sister always called Maxon or Declan or Reed. Having only seven older brothers, his sister had too many options whenever she needed help. Yet lately, she had been calling him instead of the others and it felt good to be needed.
Clarabelle sighed upon being called out. “I need to borrow your bodyguard.” She heavily sighed again. “Or just let me borrow Pedro today.”
That was quite an odd request. “Why?”
“Just because,” his sister answered curtly, not giving anything away.
“It does not work that way, Little Sister. If you need my help, especially if you need to borrow my personal bodyguard, you need to at least tell me what is going on.”
There was a five seconds pause that almost made Javier wonder if she had dropped the call before Clarabelle finally replied, “I slept with a guy last night.”
“Too much information but nothing new.” Javier shook his head. If he had to play the big brother to every guy Clarabelle had slept with, he would use up his lifetime quota. “So why do you need Pedro again? Does this guy bother you or something?”
“Well, he—” she paused, seemingly hesitated but in the end, she continued, “he took photos of me.”
“What? How is that possible? You brought him to your place as usual, right? He would not be able to use his phone to send those photos out.”
“Um, I did not.”
“You did not what?”
“I did not bring him to my place. Look, I know I messed up. I know you all have taught me to bring the guy over so at least he would be in my territory, turn on the device to disrupt the phone signal and wake up earlier than the guy. I know you are going to be super mad and I was being super dumb but—”
