Ella stared at her trembling hands and clenched her fists. This was not happening. Just when her life was getting good and everything fell to the right place, life decided that she got off easy and created problems for her. A small tear slipped out of one corner of her eye and she quickly wiped it away. What hurt more was the fact that Javier had not told her beforehand. He had not asked for her opinion even though it was crystal clear that it was her past that he had been digging. He had no right to do that. He should at least talk to her, ask for her opinion. They were partners. They were supposed to sit down and discuss things over and yet he had made decisions on his own without consulting her. Would this be the course of their relationship? Him deciding things on his own based on what he thought might be the right thing to do or the best course of action.

Closing her eyes, she leaned back against the back of the seat and clasped her hands together in between her thighs as the cab driver found his way through the crowded street. Despite the car horns and loud noises around her, her mind took her back to a few minutes ago in that Korean restaurant. Her father, Derek Williams, had stood there. His eyes had been hopeful, sad, and full of disbelief, all at the same time. She could not help but wonder what had gone through his mind. Did he miss her? Did he recognize that little girl from more than a decade ago in her? Where had he been? Did he have any regrets?

Then she remembered what Javier had informed her. She had been in panic mode but her brain stored each word that had been said.

Look, Ella, I know this might not be my place but you need to hear his side of the story. You have been hearing only your mother’s side of the story, you should give the man a chance to explain and tell you what really happened. You do not know that, Ella. He has never run away. Your mother did.

Even though her mind had ordered her to stay, arguing that it had been the logical thing to do, her heart had refused to listen. Until now, sitting in this cab for about fifteen minutes, she still could not figure out why she had not stayed. Perhaps it was denial kicking in. Maybe all these years, she had always been aware that there was a hole in her mother’s story yet she had chosen to ignore it. She should have given her father a chance to explain. She should have stayed and listened. Instead, she had followed her stupid instinct and ran away.

“I am so stupid!” she cursed herself and massaged her temple as she felt a throbbing headache was on its way.

“Are you okay, Miss?” asked the cab driver. He looked at her through the rearview mirror, his face looked worried.

“Yes. I am fine. Thank you.” Ella tried to give him her best reassuring smile.

I know that is what your mother has told you but it may not be the whole truth, Ella. Please just give the man five minutes to explain to you. To tell you his side of the story. Please.
