The second Javier entered the house (Ella’s flat), he knew that she had been there and without even calling for her name or searching through the rooms, he also knew that she had left. The only question was where she had gone to. He started by eliminating places where she could be like the office and Damon and Tanner’s flat — because it was during working hours and there would not be anyone at their home. The next thing that came to mind was her mother’s place just right outside Seattle.

He fished out his phone and sent a text to Ella, asking where she was. He wanted to call her but since he had seen her car was not parked, he assumed she was driving and he did not want to take her eyes off the road. With text, she could simply read it later. Then he dialed Eleanor’s number. The first call went to voicemail but Eleanor did pick up the next one. “Hello.”

“Eleanor, this is Javier and I am wondering if Ella is there.”

Before she gave him the answer, she let out a long, frustrated sigh. “She was.”

“What do you mean?” He felt like something just gripped his heart. “Where is she now?”

“She was here. She asked me a bunch of stuff and I—” she took a pause and let out another sigh before continuing, “I could not give her the answer she wanted but I did tell her the truth which I predict you must have known too considering you were the one who brought Derek to meet her and caused us all this unnecessary problem.” Her tone was harsh when she spoke her last sentence.

“Where is Ella?” When Eleanor did not say a word, he suspected that she was offended by the fact that he had been investigating the past and added, “Look, I did listen to Derek’s story but I do not know whether it was the truth or not. None of us knew what happened that night, a few days before you left.”

“And no one, not one,” she penetrated each of her words through gritted teeth, “should know about it.”

“It did not really matter now.” He scratched the back of his head in frustration. “What matters is where Ella is right now. Did she tell you where she go?”

“No. It was not really a conversation.” Eleanor paused and it sounded like she took a drink. “She came to my door and bombarded me with questions. Quite hysterically, saying that she needed to hear the truth so I told her that it was true. That I was the one who ran away from home and brought her along with me. She asked me why I ran away from Derek and I told her that it was none of her goddamn business. Then she left. Just as quickly as she came.”

“Which way was she heading to?” Javier asked, trying to think where Ella might be going to next. He did not know what it was but he had a bad feeling about it. Perhaps it was because this had been their first huge fight or the fact that she had left angrily. Whatever it was, it gave her some sort of unsettled feelings in the pit of his stomach and he hated it. He wanted to find her as quickly as possible.

“I think she was heading east. Probably go back to the town. Maybe she is even on her way to you. I am not sure.” Eleanor took a deep breath as if to calm herself down. “I had my own episodes after she left.”

“Okay. Take care, Eleanor. I will try looking for her here in the city. I will call you if I find her and please call me if she contacts you or if she goes to your please again. Thank you.”
