Javier paced along the laminate floor of the waiting room, his fingers running through his messy hair. This was not the first time he had done this. His tie was discarded somewhere carelessly without a car. He continued to pace, probably burning a hole in the floor but he could not think of anything else to do. He needed to do something, anything.

“Javier?”

He jumped and finally stopped pacing as he glanced at Draven who was walking towards⁰⁰ him. Javier struggled to hold back his sob as he headed straight for him, his arms locking around his younger brother in a tight embrace. He nuzzled his face into his neck and fought his best not to cry right there and then. Draven locked his arms around his brother and held onto him tightly while muttering, “I am sorry. I came here as soon as I can. Do not worry, Brother. She is gonna be okay. Ella is going to be alright, Brother.”

Then both men silently took a seat in the uncomfortable plastic chairs lining the walls of the waiting room. The room was plain white, a color that just made his headache worse.

“Is there any news?” Draven’s voice was a whisper as if he was afraid he would break something if he spoke too loud.

Javier breathed out, “No” and it felt like some part of him had gone.

“Have you told her relatives? Her mother?”

“I did call her mother and her father. I also called Damon and Tanner.”

“Wait, Ella’s father is still around?” Draven looked surprised.

“Yes. It’s a long story.” Javier gritted his teeth. Not only had it been a long story but it was also the main reason Ella was inside and having surgery.

“I have my chopper around if you want me to use it to pick up Ella’s parents or, I don’t know, anyone who needs to be here once her surgery is completed.”

“It is alright.” Javier looked down and wiped his face with two hands. “Both of her parents said that they’d be on their way.”

“Ella Stanford?” called a doctor who stepped into the waiting room. He closed the door behind himself and then turned to scan the room.

Both Javier and Draven stood and quickly came over to him. “How is she?” asked Javier in a worried tone.

“Let’s step into this room first.” The doctor pushed the door on his right and ushered both of them inside. It was a rule in any hospital that the doctor or nurse could not discuss about a patient publicly — i.e. in the elevator or public waiting room, etc. There were no one else in the small room which gave them some privacy. He pulled a chair up and then took a seat. He clasped his hands together as he leant forward on his knees. “We have rushed her into emergency surgery as soon as she got here. She had a collapsed lung from her fractured ribs and that caused some internal bleeding. She crashed on the table but we managed to get her back. However, her condition is critical and she is still unconscious. We can’t promise she’ll make a full recovery but we will continue to do our best.”

"How is the baby? How is our baby?"

The doctor sighed. His face looked like someone who had given up and Javier got a bad feeling about this. “I am very sorry but the baby did not make it. If you would like to arrange a proper burial for it, please contact our administration. They’ll let you on the details. However if you prefer for the hospital to dispose it, we can do that too.”

"Dispose it?" Javier's voice was loud and he sounded like a madman. “This is my baby we are talking about here."

"Jav," muttered Draven softly. His brother put his arm around him and gave a gentle squeeze. He then turned to the doctor and said, "We will want a proper burial."

The doctor cleared his throat. "I will let the administration know."

There were a couple of minutes of silence. Draven looked at his brother and saw that his brother was just an empty shell. It was almost as if his soul had left his body.

At last, Javier asked in a trembling voice that he almost could not recognize. "Can I see her?"
