Ella looked at her mother, Eleanor Stanford, for a few seconds before finally dragged her gaze back to her father, Derek Williams. Both of them were staring back at her expectantly as if waiting for her answer however she did not have any. In the end, she asked them a question instead, “What are you asking me to forgive you?”
Her mother blinked. Once. Twice. Then she turned to her father. “How much have you told her, Derek?”
“I did not get a chance to tell her much. I think Javier might have told her something beforehand,” he replied and when he saw Eleanor was about to interrupt him, he quickly added, “which I have no idea what.”
Ella frowned, all of a sudden she was having a headache. “Could you both please explain to me what happened? All I remember was that you,” she pointed at her father, her frown deepened as she tried and failed to comprehend, “you have left us. You ran away from Momma and me. H-how did you get here?”
Her father shook his head, a sad smile was on his face. “Sweetheart, I have never run away.”
“B-but Mom said—” Ella moved her gaze to her mother and saw the resignation there. “You lied,” she breathed out. “How could you lie to me, Mom?”
“I am so sorry. I was not thinking clearly at that time. All I wanted was to run away, to escape reality. But I was too coward for doing that alone so I took you with me.”
In all of her life, she had never seen her mother acting like this and this truly surprised her. Still, she needed her answers even though judging by how her parents had asked for her forgiveness, she could sense something bad about it. “Why did you run?”
“I-I—” Her mother bit her lips then nervously glanced at Derek before casting her glance back at the floor. “I am sorry. I really can not say it.”
Ella stared at her mother, frowning. "Momma, you have lied to me my whole life. The least you could do is tell me the reason behind it."
