Since getting out of the shower, Ella had sniffed the cologne at the cabinet in the bathroom, hoping that would pique her memory. She knew the scent because it seemed popular with many men, but that was it. Nothing else crossed her mind. Then she rummaged through her chest of drawers for a pair of cotton gym shorts and a t-shirt when her hand froze as she touched a pair of man’s boxer shorts. It was a regular dark blue boxer with a black colored elastic band. And that got her thinking about the other side of being in a relationship with someone, especially at the engagement stage. Sex.
The same panicky sensations from two days ago — when she had screamed at Javier upon knowing his status in her life— threatened to bubble out of her, but she clamped down on her jaw and forced it away. She could not lose it again. It was not her. She had to soothe her mind, breathe deeply, think rationally, and take it all one step at a time. Having a mental breakdown would not help her in any way. She needed to be calm, in control, and logical.
This was not working. She had so many emotions inside of her. She wanted to laugh and cry at the same time. A hysterical, giggling sob broke through, and she slapped her hands over her mouth, holding it all inside. She must have slept with him. After all, he was her fiancé and they had been living together. But wouldn’t she remember something like that? She distinctly recalled that she had been a virgin and the first and last relationship she had had was with Leroy Taylor. She could vaguely remember how clingy he was and that was good enough of a reason not to sleep with him thus she easily concluded that she had not slept with Leroy. But how about Javier? All of a sudden, her body felt warm and she could feel her heart racing as she remembered his kisses and the feeling of his lips moving against hers, how his tongue had its own expert skill in getting entangled with hers as if it knew its way inside her mouth and how to make her feel good. Yes, she had definitely had sex with him. Her brain might not be able to remember him but the rest of her body could. Intensely. Passionately.
Ella shook her head. She had to get out of the bathroom. Somehow this small enclosed space had suffocated her. She quickly put on her bathrobe, swung the door open, and fled to her bedroom where she buried her face in the pillow, holding it tightly with both hands as if she was trying to escape from something. Then with a precipitate realization, she picked up a smell. The pillow smelled like him. She smiled slightly then she jumped off the bed with a start, flinging the pillow away.
He had shared this bed with her. Ella eyed the bedding as though it was a viper ready to strike at her. How could she forget about him? Someone she agreed in being married to. If Damon and Tanner had not come up with an idea of him moving out, she was quite sure he was going to slide into the bed with her tonight. He was going to touch her. This man she did not know. The man who had probably touched her numerous times before, and yet she did not recall any of them.
With a muffled cry, she grabbed the bedcover and pulled it off the bed out of frustration because just like the pillows, it smelled like him. She felt the scent burn into her skin, scalding her with it. Pain shot down her arms. She threw the bedcover away and it flew from her arms, landing on the bed again, teasing her, telling her she could not escape — that there was no escape.
Dizziness swamped her. The bed twirled in her vision, a swirling mass of color. Ella opened her mouth, sucked in a deep breath, and screamed.
“Ella!” She heard her name being called at least a dozen times. All were done in a worried tone. “No one is going to hurt you. Everything will be alright.”
“How do I make it better? What am I supposed to do to make you feel better?” he murmured, hoping like hell that she had not hurt herself.
Her eyes were still tightly shut when she finally answered him. “Kiss me,” she said, barely above whispering level but loud enough for him.
There was one second of hesitation before he wrapped his arms around her and obliged her request, wishing and hoping that it would distract her enough not to feel any pain. Javier pressed Ella against the mattress. He held her legs down with his own. Their bodies weighed the mattress down. Her head whipped side to side, and he had a difficult time connecting their mouths without letting go of her arms. Yet somehow he managed. And as soon as he captured her mouth, he held on for the ride.
Ella’s eyes reopened and she screamed at him and bit him, drawing blood, but he did not let go. The fight slowly drained out of her, and when he felt safe to do so, he carefully released her pinned body. His hands came up to cup her face as he deepened the kiss. Ella shuddered once before she plunged her tongue into his mouth, kissing him back with the eagerness that had been missing earlier. Her hands latched onto his neck, embracing him tightly. His arms went around her waist, pulling her closer to him, and she held onto him, diving into his very soul through this kiss.
