Ella stared at the door for several seconds after he had left then laid her body down on top of the mattress, staring at the ceiling. She was not sure what had just happened. It was unreasonable of her to ask him to kiss her. She did not know him. Whatever he had claimed to be, she had no recollection of it. Until now, a few minutes later, she was not even sure what had caused her to even said those two simple words, what had driven her to ask him the most embarrassing request she had ever said in her life. Gosh, just thinking about it made her face redden. She wanted to bury her face in the pillow but then she remembered that the pillow smelled like him.
Her body wanted him and she was having a hard time trying to control her urges. Her logical mind cautioned her, telling her multiple times that she did not know this man and she should not be acting or feeling like this. Yet whenever he was near her, there was this pulsating, undeniable, hard-to-resist force that pulled her towards him. Although it all sounded so lovely, so romantic, she could not simply fall for it. Or perhaps she did not want to believe the fact that she had thrown all of her principles in life out of the window and dated her boss.
Then she recalled the days at the hospital where she was looking at Javier’s handsome face, remembering how incredibly kind and patient he had been with her, and imagined falling in love with him would not have been difficult. But had she truly fallen in love with him? Or had she agreed to marry him because of his money? It was obvious from the tailored suits he was wearing, the car he owned, and the company he must have.
Ella blinked and realized that she had not searched him on the internet. She quickly grabbed her phone off the nightstand and did a quick search on him. The more she read, the more her hand tightened around her phone, and the more she got scared. Not only was he loaded, but he was also practically born with a silver spoon. Moreover, his family, The Summers, was one of the most powerful families in the world — not just in the United States of America. Then she went through some news articles about him on Forbes and gasped. He was on the ‘Thirty Under Thirty’ list, being one of the thirty people who had become a billionaire before reaching the age of thirty years. There was more news on him and his numerous achievements.
Being quite overwhelmed, she dropped her phone on the bed and took a deep calming breath, closing her eyes for a moment. Once she had regained control of her own emotion, she took her phone again and typed ‘Javier Summers relationship’. There were only five to ten photos of them being together with articles titled ‘The Most Eligible Bachelor is Now Engaged’, ‘The Office Love Affair’, ‘No More Models for Summers’, and there were many more. One of them, in particular, caught her attention. From Nada to Prada. She clicked on it and began to read. The article mentioned her lack of fortune and his many possessions. They also pointed out the many, many difference they had whether it was money, social status, or family background. It did not take a genius to figure out that the article had just confirmed her worst fear.
It must have been his money and how powerful his family was that had driven her to forget about her life scruples and date her boss — the person who paid her to work. Still holding her phone in her hand, she got up and walked out of her bedroom, making her way to the kitchen where he was standing by the stove. She stopped once they were only a few feet apart and watched him dump the cooked pasta into the semi-cooked sauce and then stirred to mix them together. Ella continued to watch him until he turned around, looking for plates. “Oh, are you hungry already?” he asked casually but his eyes had never met hers, almost as if he was purposely avoiding eye contact with her. And it did pique her curiosity.
“Yeah,” she lied, finding it less embarrassing to simply say yes than to tell him she had searched him on the internet and now she had an endless list of questions inside her head. “How is the carbonara?”
“It is pretty much done.” Javier placed the two full plates on the dining table then went back to look for something in the drawer. He pulled out a cheese grater and smiled. “Though I still need to get the cheddar. You like to have some grated cheddar sprinkled on top of it.”
Frowning, she queried, “Don’t you mean parmesan?”
He shook his head adamantly. “No, cheddar. You like cheddar instead of parmesan and I have to say, it does taste oddly good together with the pasta.”
The frown on her forehead did not leave her even when she took a seat and looked down at the plate in front of her. She was pretty sure people would normally put parmesan on their pasta and she was not the type of person who was adventurous enough to try new things especially when it came to food.
Javier came back with the grated cheese and sprinkled some on her plate. “Will this be enough or do you want more?”
“I don’t know,” she answered truthfully. “It is enough, I suppose. I will add some more if I feel like it.”
“Okay,” he answered shortly then took his seat after pouring a Sauvignon Blanc into two wine glasses. “Let’s eat then.”
Ella grabbed the fork and began eating. After one or two bites, she must admit that cheddar did go quite well with carbonara and she added some more to her plate. “I was learning about you,” she confessed after taking a sip of her white wine.
