Estelle's POV
I slammed my elbow into the nose of the person lunging at me from the left, and she let out a scream as she covered her nose. I tried to run from her, but Hailey grabbed me by my long hair and pulled me back into the circle of them. There were too many of them and I was swamped by the punches coming in all directions.
"Still dare to piss me off now?" Hailey kicked me in the stomach and I felt my insides being stirred together.
I crumpled to the ground from the pain as the girl I had hit in the nose walked up to me. Her rigid rubber-soled shoe stomped on my face, and my cheekbone was about to shatter as the force under her foot increased.
"The teacher is coming!" I didn't know who in the crowd shouted. The weight on my face disappeared with it.
Hailey and her friend scattered, and I got up from the floor and touched my face. All I could feel was swelling and sticky blood.
The teacher came in my direction and seemed to be trying to check my injury. But when he saw my face, he turned his face in another direction as if he had seen something dirty.
He let out a dismissive grunt from his nose as I stumbled past him. The teachers at school had been acquiescing to the bullying because no one cared about me. No one cared about a girl who didn't have a wolf.
Dad was still not at home today, hell knows where he went to drink again. I hoped he didn't smash anything when he comes back in the middle of the night today. I was unpacking the bills I just got out of the mailbox. The electricity bill was going to be due again this month. I was running out of money from my previous part-time job, so it's time to find a new one. I can't count on my father and brother in this area at all, they won't spend a penny on this family.
Nathan's book bag was thrown on the couch, and he was surprised to be home so early today. I walked up to Nathan's room door and knocked on his door. Immediately the sound of things scattering on the floor came from the room.
"Nathan? Are you in there?"
"It's me, what's wrong?"
"What's that sound in there?"
"It's none of your business, just get away."
The more he acted that way, the stronger the uneasy feeling in my heart, I pushed open the door to Nathan's room. He was squatting on the floor picking up small white pills that were scattered all over the floor.
"And you brought this back again?" I grabbed Nathan's arm and tried to pull him up. But Nathan pushed me back.
"Who let you in? Get out!"
"Throw these away." I got up from the floor and said to Nathan, holding back my anger, "If Dad finds out he's going to hit you again."
"Let him be, he'll hit me even if I'm not high."
"Think of your life for yourself! Are you going to ruin it on these drugs?" I took Nathan's arm.
"Why are you so annoying? My life was ruined a long time ago. It's because of you that mom died and dad became what he is now!" Nathan waved his hand and pushed me away.
My head began to ache intensely, Nathan's words were like a knife in the softest part of my heart. I didn't care what other people think of me, I could fight back if outsiders bully me any more. I was not sure what I was doing wrong, but it's the people I love most that were hurting me, and I was thinking of David again. The pain in my neck started again, and the choking sensation from that night returned to my throat. I collapsed on the floor where the pills had been scattered.
When I woke up again it was almost midnight. I got up and there was still no one in the house. I swallowed the bitterness in my throat and called Nathan's phone. But I called several times and Nathan didn't answer, and I was afraid he was being coaxed by those punks again. So I put on my coat and went out the door.
I wasn't old enough to get into the bar that Nathan's friends frequented, so I had to wait at the door. There were a lot of werewolves around whistling at me, and I had to try not to meet their eyes.
Then a tall figure stood in front of me, "I remember you, girl without wolf."
I looked up at the man in front of me, and there couldn't have been a worse scene than the one I was in. In front of me was Brandon, the son of our wolf pack Alpha, who was also Hailey's boyfriend.
Brandon stood in front of me and asked me, "Estelle? That's your name, right?"
