Samantha’s POV
I opened my eyes to a dark room, which was strange because I felt rested as if I’d slept for hours. Truth be told, I wished I could sleep for a week and wake up to find that yesterday’s terror had been nothing but a nightmare. But it wasn’t like that; unfortunately, it was real.
When I closed my eyes, I could still feel the revulsion from Reynold’s hands on me. The knot that formed in my throat from the fear of that monster’s attack hasn’t completely gone away. As much as I didn’t want to imagine it, I knew well what would have happened to me if Henry hadn’t arrived. I didn’t even know how he got there, how he found me. All I knew was that he arrived in time and prevented the worst- he saved me,
I curled up in bed, seeing his empty side. I pulled his pillow against any body and hugged it, breathing in his scent. Why isn’t he here? After seeing his father grabbing me, would he no longer be able to stay near me? Even though it was forceful and Reynold didn’t even manage to kiss me, could Henry live with this?
I felt a sadness wash over me, something enormous and uncontrollable. The horror of being subdued and almost violated left me nauseous and was already difficult to handle. Moreover, imagining that Henry would leave me hurt beyond what my strength could bear. Why couldn’t he be here with me? I needed his embrace, his affection. Even Cinnamon wasn’t around. I felt lonely and abandoned.
Tears rolled down my face, and I simply let them fall one by one. My body ached, my soul ached, even my mind ached. I felt a warm, delicate little hand touch my face, opened my eyes slowly, and the room was bathed in light. Four pairs of eyes were watching me anxiously. I just opened my arms.
“I need hugs!” I said as they wrapped me in a bundle of arms.
“Nightingale, why are you crying?” Henry asked, lying behind me and wrapping me in his arms.
“Because I thought you’d left me.” I sniffled and felt Clara’s little hand on my face again.
“My mom says not to cry because it gives you wrinkles,” Clara said very seriously, and I gave a small laugh.
“I’m so glad you’re all here!” I squeezed her and Enzo in my arms and felt Cinnamon’s nose nudging my foot. “You too, Cinnamon.” He lay down and rested his head on my feet.
“Listen carefully, because I’ll say this forever, for the rest of my life: I will never leave you!” Henry said and kissed my neck. “. And neither will these two, they’re officially ours now.”
“Are you kidding?” I asked, playing along.
“No, I’m not. Edward promised.” Henry laughed, and Enzo clicked his tongue.
“As if they could live without us,” Enzo laughed.
“Now they can, they have Truffle and Popcorn,” Clara confirmed. “Or haven’t you noticed that mom sneaks treats to them and dad plays with them in the garden?”
“That deceiver!” Enzo looked disappointed.
“Deceiver? Is that your word of the week?” Clara looked at her brother.
“Yes, it is! Cool, right?!” Enzo was pleased, but I still hadn’t understood.
“Mine is better,” Clara said disdainfully.
“You always say that,” Enzo teased her.
“And I’m always right,” Clara was quite a haughty little girl.
“Wait, what’s this about word of the week?” I asked curiously.

“My mon makes us learn a new word every week, and we have to start using it. So we need to check the dictionary, find a word we don’t know, and use it throughout the week,” Enzo explained.
‘And you do this without getting anything in return?” Henry teased.
“Uncle, of course we get something in return – the pleasure of expanding our vocabulary,” Clara explained, feeling very clever.
“You think I’m falling for that, you little mercenary?” Henry poked Clara, and I started laughing.
“Mom gives fifty bucks to whoever learns and uses the word,” Enzo couldn’t hold back and spilled the beans.
“Blabbermouth!” Clara complained. “And Dad gives another fifty to whoever learns the hardest word. And I always win.” She flashed a brilliant smile.
“”Always‘ is a long time, squirt. You win many times, but only because Dad plays favorites with you,” Enzo complained.
“And what’s your word, Clara?” I asked with a smile, feeling my chest a little lighter.
“My word, aunt, will ensure that I receive the requital of victory with great enthusiasm this week!” Clara sat on the bed and looked truly victorious at Enzo.
“Darn! The mini blackmailer won again!” Enzo seemed disappointed and got laughs from all of us.
“I didn’t even know that one, Enzo,” I tried to support him. “What does ‘requital‘ mean?”
