Enzo’s POV

Being a student was getting harder and harder. The English teacher decided to make us read a book that was almost impossible to find. I had to trek all the way across town because out of all the bookstores in the malls, only this one had it. Everyone was complaining that they couldn’t buy the book because they couldn’t find it. I spent two days on the phone and finally tracked it down. So I rushed to secure my copy to avoid getting a zero on the test that the teacher had already warned us about.

But since I was at the mall, I might as well take a little walk around. I bought the book first – I had reserved it, but you never know if someone might accidentally sell my copy, so I went to the bookstore first. When I left, I was walking through the food court when I spotted Aunt Pearl at a café nearby. I had to say hello.

“What a coincidence! Aunt Pearl, how are you?” I approached and noticed she was with a younger woman who was pretty but strange–looking.

“Enzo, darling, what a surprise! You’re far from home.” Aunt Pearl stood up and hugged me.

“Yeah, Aunt, I came to buy a book that I could only find here.”

“Well, sit down and have some coffee with me and my friend. Let me introduce you. This is Nicole. Nicole, this is Enzo.”

I greeted the woman who looked at me as if she was analyzing every feature of my face. But there was something odd about her; she smiled forcefully, just like the girls in my class when they don’t like someone.

“Aunt, I don’t want to interrupt.” I didn’t want to disturb Aunt Pearl’s conversation. “I just stopped by to say hello.”

“You’re not interrupting, dear. Sit down.” Aunt Pearl insisted, and I sat.

“Are you two out for a walk or just taking a break from work?” I asked and called the waiter.

“Just out. I finished work for the day and came to meet Nicole. I promised to help her find a new job, and thanks to your mother, I got her an interview at your father’s company.” Aunt Pearl explained while Nicole kept looking at me with a smile that seemed more fake than her breasts, which were obviously silicon.

“Oh, that’s nice!” But I thought if my mom knew what kind of clothes Nicole wore, she wouldn’t have arranged this interview.” And what position is she interviewing for?”

“Secretary. Your father will interview her personally tomorrow.” Aunt Pearl seemed excited, but the woman who needed the job didn’t seem to care much.

“Do you really need the job, Nicole?” I asked, trying to understand the behavior of this woman who I found very strange, as if she didn’t want to be there.

“Oh, yes, very much. I take care of my retired father, and I became unemployed after my boss died – he was a dentist.” Nicole spoke with a poor–me voice, and I already didn’t like it.

My father was always telling me about the interviews he conducted and the stories he heard. Many people need to work because they help support their families – my father always talks about this. But this girl was wearing a new designer purse and an expensive watch. Something wasn’t adding up.

“Must be tough. Look, since we’re here, I can call my father and he can interview you today. I’ll take you to the company – my driver is waiting outside.” Since the girl needed the job, I’d be happy to move up the interview,

“Oh, sweetie, don’t bother. It’s already scheduled for tomorrow,” she said with that fake smile again.

“It’s no trouble at all, Nicole. What do you think, aunt? We can drop Nicole off for the interview with my father and then grab coffee with aunt Sam?” I asked enthusiastically.

“That sounds fantastic! But can your father see her today?” Aunt Pearl worried.

“I’ll call him, but I’m sure he’ll make it work.” My father would certainly do this favor, since I’d be giving her a ride. I knew my

“Let’s go then, Nicole. Who knows, maybe you’ll start work tomorrow!” Aunt Pearl was more than excited, and Nicole eventually agreed, though she didn’t seem thrilled.

I took out my phone and called my father, who immediately agreed to interview the girl. Aunt Pearl was very happy about this.

“Aunt, I’m going to call aunt Sam and let her know we’re coming by for coffee,” I said, already looking up her number and dialing. I called three times but she didn’t answer.

“Maybe she can’t answer right now, Enzo,” Aunt Pearl said.

“She always answers my calls. If she can’t talk, she at least says ‘I’I call you back,“” I said and tried again. This time she picked up. “Auntie, beautiful, guess who I’m with?”

“Hi, dear. I have no idea, with whom?” Aunt Samantha answered strangely on the other end of the line, sounding distressed.

“Aunt, is everything okay?” I asked worriedly.

“Yes, it is. Tell me, who are you with?” She didn’t convince me; it would be good to go meet her..

“With Aunt Pearl, and we’re going to have coffee with you!” I said and squeezed Aunt Pearl’s hand.

“Enzo, are you kidding me?” Aunt Sam asked nervously, leaving me confused.

“No, Aunt. I’m here at the mall with Aunt Pearl. Say hi to her, Aunt.‘ I told Aunt Pearl.
