I was getting increasingly nervous. As the car moved toward my destination, I felt more helpless, scared, and distressed. The taxi driver, a very kind gentleman, watched me through the rearview mirror while keeping his eyes on traffic. He drove slowly and carefully, perhaps due to his age, making sure not to cause any accident.
My phone rang and I grabbed it from my purse – it was Enzo. I couldn’t answer him, I just couldn’t. But he persisted. He always did, and I always answered. I thought it through – If I didn’t answer, it would raise suspicions. Sure, Michael must have returned to the company, but he probably thought I was in another department and wouldn’t be alarmed yet. Maybe he was still looking for me inside the building. So, it was better to answer Enzo.
When he told me he was with my mother, I couldn’t believe it. Then he put her on the line, and I heard her voice. I couldn’t hold back anymore, started crying, and explained that Romulus had called me from her phone. Only when she told me her phone was missing did I understand that he had bluffed – he had her phone but didn’t have her.
“Miss, should I return to our starting point?” The taxi driver watched me carefully through the rearview mirror and asked when I hung up the phone.
“Yes, please, let’s go back,” I replied, unable to stop crying.
“Thank God!” he commented. “I knew something wasn’t right. The address you gave isn’t a place for someone like you. I was driving slowly on purpose to give you time to change your mind.‘
“You’re very thoughtful. How did you notice something was wrong?” I responded, wanting him to keep talking to help calm me down.
“I’ve been driving taxis for thirty years, probably longer than you’ve been alive. I’ve seen a lot,” he replied while making a U- turn. “Will someone meet you there when we arrive?”
“Yes, my mother,” I answered, feeling relief taking over my heart
“Then I’ll speed up so we can get there faster,” the driver gave me a warm smile.
My phone rang again – it was Henry, desperate. I felt guilty for making him feel this way.
“Samantha, tell me where you are? Are you okay?” Henry spoke frantically when I answered the call.
“I’m fine, Henry. I’m in a taxi with a very nice driver, heading back to the company,” I answered, trying to calm him down.
“How long until you get here?” Henry asked anxiously.
“About ten minutes,” I estimated, noting where we were.
“I’ll be waiting for you!” Henry sighed. “My goddess, don’t do this to me again. I can’t lose you.”
“I’m sorry,” I felt more than guilty for making him suffer.
“Get here quickly and safely.”
We said goodbye and the driver started weaving through traffic in a rush, nothing like the calm man who’d been driving earlier. My phone rang again, and it was Enzo once more, saying he wouldn’t hang up until we met.
When we arrived at the company, Henry, Michael, and four other security guards were waiting for me at the entrance. The taxi driver helped me out of the car and refused to accept payment. As he left, he warned me not to fall into any trap.
Henry rushed toward me and held me tight. I let the tears roll down my face while feeling the comfort of his arms around me. Inside the company, my mother and Enzo were already waiting. When I saw my mom, I threw myself into her arms.
“Sweetheart, thank God you’re alright.” My mother squeezed me in her embrace, just as Henry had done.
“Mom, I thought he was going to kill you,” I cried.

“Sam, I don’t know what happened. I went to the mall to meet an acquaintance, and I don’t know how I lost my phone, but I had it when I entered the mall,” my mother explained, though even she seemed confused.
“But that acquaintance of yours is weird, Aunt Pearl, she disappeared out of towhere,” Enzo remarked.
“That was strange indeed, Enzo. What could have happened to Nicle?” I looked at Henry, who was eyeing my mother suspiciously.
“What’s Nicole’s last name, Pearl?” Henry asked. Was he thinking it was the same Nicole he had dated? I thought it was just a coincidence.
“I don’t know. Actually, I met her by chance at a hospital. She was here with her father, and we started talking I felt sympathetic and was helping her find a job,” my mother explained, not understanding Henry’s train of thought.
“Are you thinking it’s your ex?” I finally asked.
“It has to be! Your mother’s phone disappearing while she’s with someone named Nicole, and then Romulus calling you from it? That’s too strange.”
“But Enzo would have recognized her,” I pointed out.
“He hasn’t. Enzo never saw Nicole. He was just a baby when my father left with her, and they were only together for a year,” Henry explained.
“Look, I thought that woman was so fake. Just like her breasts – huge implants,” Enzo commented. “Do you have a photo of her?
”
“Huge implants? Must be her.” Henry shook his head. “I don’t have a photo here, but Patrick might.”
Henry called Patrick, and soon Patrick, Virginia, Alexander, Catherine, and Manu gathered around me.
“You need to stop keeping things to yourself, Sam!” Catherine scolded me. “You could have talked to any of us.”
