Chapter 1: The First Time I Saw You

Flavian’s POV

What a boring day! The only thing happening in this city was iny parents calling to make my life hell. My father had this fixed idea that I had to leave the police force and join him and my brother in the family business. That would never happen.

I had already worked in the family business, both before and after graduating, but managing a network of proteinbased food production companies wasn’t my calling, nor was taking care of the family farms.

I admit that when I started studying law, that was the plan. Even though I didn’t particularly enjoy working in the companies, I tried. I chose a career that could add value to business administration, and having legal knowledge would be very useful, since my brother was already graduated in business and accounting.

However, I didn’t expect law school to transform me. I discovered various other areas, a world of possibilities opened up before me, and it was impossible not to be seduced by a career in law enforcement. Unwittingly, I discovered what many call a vocation, but for me, it’s passion. I tried to put the idea aside, but it wouldn’t leave me. It was as if I had received a calling, and I couldn’t help but answer it. I left everything behind and became a detective, much to my parentsdespair.

But my father was closing in, the proud Cesar Moreno wanted to retire and wanted both sons to lead the company. But the great businessman, recognized for his intelligence and business acumen, couldn’t see what was right under his nose. He didn’t see that the family member born with the mission to manage the Moreno empire, who had passion for business in blood, wasn’t the sons he bragged about as his successors, but rather the family’s beautiful flower, the youngest and a woman, my little sister Liz. But my father would never recognize her talent, unfortunately. He was the oldfashioned type who thought business wasn’t for

women.

The fact is, I was getting tired of his and my mother’s interference in my life. That day, while I was getting ready for work, my mother appeared out of nowhere in my apartment complaining about my choices. And this happened frequently she would pop up from nowhere, in various places, to complain about the thoughtless son she claimed I was.

With all their pressure, I was constantly living stressed out, needing some action to destress, to shift my focus from these family squabbles. But in this wonderfully peaceful little city, something really interested a policeman rarely happened. It was tedious!

Lost in my thoughts, looking for a way to release tension, I answered my phone almost automatically, without paying attention to what I was doing.

Detective Moreno,I said firmly, staring into space while thinking about taking a vacation.

Flavian, my friend, how are you?My friend Patrick Guzman spoke from the other end, pulling me from my thoughts.

Patrick was giving me exactly what I wanted action. He quickly told me what was happening: Alexander Miller’s son had been kidnapped, and there was a woman in town with a pending arrest warrant who most likely knew something about the kidnapping. This got me excited a fugitive. I would go hunting for this rat.

I gathered my team and hit the streets; we wouldn’t leave any stone unturned in this city. By the end of the day, we had arrested the fugitive and the other two kidnappers, and rescued the little boy. It had been a good day, and it got even better when Patrick told me he would charter a private jet so I could transport the boy and the prisoners to Paradise Port.

When I arrived at the company and the little boy was placed in his parentsarms, I felt completely fulfilled. It was more than just a duty accomplished; it was a feeling of being useful and helping people, doing good, and that was what fascinated me about my job. The relieved faces of the parents hugging their son assured me that I was doing the right thing I had found my path.

But this trip had something even more special in store for me. Alexander called an employee and asked her to escort me to the room where the other officers were. She was very cordial, but as we passed by the secretary’s desk, she was called away.

Sam, I’m sorry, but I need your help with an urgent email,I heard a melodious, light, very feminine voice say.
