S3–Chapter 3
Manuela’s POV
I had not expected this week to be so hectic, but fortunately everything worked out well and Catherine and Peter were rescued and were safe after that. I needed to catch up because I had missed two days of college classes. I had subjects to catch up on and assignments to submit, and I would certainly be pulling an all–nighter. And there was still Catherine and Alexander’s wedding on Saturday.
I signaled and got off the bus a block away from my house. At that time I was taking evening classes, I was thinking about how practical and safe it would be to have a car, since I was getting home late and the streets were empty. Maybe it was time to use the money my grandfather had left me when he passed away, I quickened my pace, almost running. I was afraid of walking alone on the streets at night – I had been raised in a small town by an overprotective and old–fashioned mother, everything
scared me.
Even though I was afraid of everything and did not know how to manage away from my mother’s overprotection, I decided to face the world. I took the college entrance exam and chose a university far from my hometown, not only because it was one of the best law schools in the country but also because I wanted to break free from my mother’s overprotection, which made me feel trapped and muzzled.
My mother was a very strict and old–fashioned woman with very outdated concepts about women’s role in society and radical ideas about everything. She was a very religious person, so everything was a sin to her, even if the church she attended did not consider it so. You could not blame her religiosity for her ultra–radical outdated thinking, but she used religion as an excuse for
her extreme convictions.
My father, on the contrary, supported my decision. In fact, he was the one who advised me to break free from the shackles my mother kept on me. He said I needed to learn to fend for myself because parents do not live forever, and he wanted me to be a strong woman who makes her own life decisions. He had the biggest fight with my mother when I announced I was moving. She threatened to lock me in my room and find me a husband. So, my father told me to pack my bags without her knowing, waited for her to go to church, put me in the car, and brought me here. My brother told me that when he returned home, she made a scene and even called the police, who ended up laughing at the situation, making her even more furious.
And that was the truth – I fled from home with my father’s help, and it had been almost a year since I had seen them because I had not dared to return to my hometown and risk being locked in my room.
The first weeks were very difficult. My father helped me with everything and covered all my expenses, but after I started working, I managed well on my own and often refused his help. He owned a medium–sized dairy business specializing in goat cheese that had become successful in the country – a business that started with my grandfather, which my father expanded significantly, and my brother was modernizing and bringing many good ideas to the business.
These thoughts about my family distracted me until I entered my apartment and locked the door well, with my heart racing and shaky legs.
“It is decided. Since I am off until Monday, I will go out tomorrow and buy a car. I have already done the hardest part, which was getting my license as soon as I arrived in the city, so now I will buy the car,” I said to myself.
On Friday, I spent the morning researching cars online. I found a model I liked and had enough money for it in my savings account. I got ready and went out, stopped for lunch at a restaurant near the dealership, and afterward went there all determined. The salesman, a gentleman in his fifties who assisted me, was very friendly. I chose the car but would have to wait a few days since they did not have the model in the color I chose, a gleaming cobalt blue.
While the salesman was filling out the documents, I looked at the door and saw a Greek god walking in, and I was mesmerized. He was very tall, muscular, with very short black hair and a beard that gave him an air of mystery. He was wearing sunglasses, jeans that showed off his thighs, and a black shirt with rolled–up sleeves. And when he smiled at the salesman who attended to him, I felt warmth spreading throughout my body. He was breathtaking.
“How gorgeous! Oh, I would need a ladder to climb up to him…” I sighed, my thoughts on the Greek god.
“What did you say, miss?” The salesman asked, and only then did I realize I had spoken out loud. This habit of talking to myself was always getting me into embarrassing situations.

“What?” I played dumb, which was better than admitting I was crazy.
“Did you say something about a ladder?” The salesman insisted. Lord, don’t did this to me.
“Oh yes, I was looking at that huge car over there, it’s beautiful, but I would need a ladder to get into it.” I smiled innocently, pointing toward the car that Greek god was looking at. The salesman chuckled.
