Flavian’s POV

Manu and I talked a bit more with her father. He seemed to be a good man who truly loved his daughter, unlike his wife. When we hung up the phone, she was calm, but her face was still marked by tears. I pulled her onto my lap and ran my fingers across her cheeks.

“Now, beautiful girl, tell me who Cam is,” 1 asked, and she started laughing.

“Anyone would say you’re jealous.”

“But I really am.” I didn’t even try to deny it; it was the absolute truth. She looked at me as if analyzing my response.

“Cam is my older brother. He’s wonderful and always protected me from my mother’s anger. He’s from my father’s first marriage; his mother died giving birth to their second child, who also didn’t survive. Soon after, my parents got married and had me. Julian is my younger brother, and he’s my mother’s favorite; we don’t get along very well.”

“I see. From what your father said, your mother has always been like this with you.” From the way her mother treated her, I could have sworn she was her stepmother, not her actual mother.

“Always. It’s like she hates me,” Manu sighed.

“And is she the same way with Cam?” I asked curiously, wondering how she treated her stepson since she mistreated her own daughter.

“She doesn’t mess with Cam. She’s always ignored him, like he was an intruder in our house,” Manu said sadly. “My brother is so good, he suffered so much losing his mother. My father said he thought she would accept him as a son, but it wasn’t like that.

“And it’s different with Julian?”

“Julian gets all her love and affection. He’s a difficult person, thinks he owns the world, mistreats people. He and Cam hate each other. And he and I don’t get along either. He used to hit me and then act innocent. Cam left home when he turned eighteen, and I did the same thing, using college as my excuse.” Manu spoke with great sadness in her voice.

“And your father?”

“My father is loving, kind, charitable. He’s a good man. He treats everyone with respect and kindness. He always tried to give me the love my mother denied me, protected me whenever he could. You’ll like him. And I think he liked you.” She gave me a weak smile, and I smiled back at her.

“Little one, you have your father, your older brother, and now you have me to take care of you and protect you,” I assured her, so

she would know she wasn’t alone.

“Flavian, you didn’t need to tell my father you’re my boyfriend,” Manu said without looking into my eyes.

“Oh no? Did you want me to lie to him and say we’re friends?” I asked, finding this strange. Manu was usually always honest.

“No, because we’re not just friends. But we’re not boyfriend and girlfriend either.”

“What did you say, Manuela?” She widened her eyes – it was the first time I had used her real name instead of a nickname, and I wasn’t happy. “What do you think we are?”

“I don’t know, but you hadn’t said we were dating, so I…” I cut her off before she could finish her thought.

“Oh, I needed to say it?” I was beginning to understand what she was talking about, but I was still a bit irritated that she thought she wasn’t my girlfriend.

“It’s just…” she was turning red. I just stared at her, encouraging her to speak. “It’s just that I’ve never dated or anything like that. So I don’t know if you needed to say it, but I also don’t know if you want to be my boyfriend and…” She reminded me that she had no experience with relationships, and my irritation subsided.
